Jacob

As a rule, men don’t grow up believing in a happily ever after. We don’t believe in meeting the love of our lives; or the white picket fence, and 2.5 children. Every man thinks that those stupid dreams or fantasies are just nonexistent shit until it happens to them. We should have been forewarned.

I wish I was prepared for someone to appear in my life and change all my priorities. I suddenly wanted that fence and children. The part of meeting the love of my life became very real, but I wasn’t ready for suddenly losing it all, and my life plummeting into this shithole forever.

The heartbreak of losing your soulmate is one of the worst pains you will ever live with. I should campaign and warn the young people. Vaccinate against love because if you lose it, you could lose yourself for the rest of your life. The burden on your back will forever mark you and wither away your soul, darkening your days and the rest of your natural life.

This isn’t false advertisement or a dramatic display of one bitter soul.

Pria

I fought by my mother’s side until her last breath, and tried to help my father until his last memories dissipated. My sister is the last one standing, but her life is a miracle that can end at any given moment. All my life I’ve never been alone, but always felt lonely.

Today, my options on how to live my life are endless, yet my heart and my best friend limit them. Stay in Seattle, close to the one person that will never let me inside his world.

The thug, as mom would’ve called him. A man with a bad boy attitude and a heart bigger than the ocean.

excerpt

“He looks different. Like you—all grown up.” She laughs, rising up from her seat and heading toward the crystal division that separates us from the stream and the thunder, and she stares at the outside. Maybe enjoying the show. She’s a sucker for all natural phenomenon. “I sound like one of my mother’s friends who hasn’t seen me in years. The dreadlocks are missing, but then he looks great with that longish, messy-strands do. Who’s Serenity? Because it sounds as though he’s still in that ‘love ’em and leave ’em’ stage.”

“He is. That’s…” I stop before I say I do the same. The bitter taste of knowing that she walked in on me fucking another woman hasn’t disappeared. “Our neighbor. Usually our downstairs neighbor is his booty call.” She looks over her shoulder with a worried frown. “Only the single ones. Don’t give me that judgmental face.”

“I wasn’t judging. In fact, I’m solving one of the issues I have.” I walk toward the couch and take a seat while watching her. This sounds interesting. It’s puzzling too. How can a booty call solve her issues? “You should do that—an indoor booty call. If you have someone steady and discreet, drink at home—”

“Then I’ll be pathetic and become an alcoholic.” She looks at me skeptically, while walking toward the couch opposite mine. “I’m not, Pria. I abstain from drinking. There are days I have to do it in order to keep my promise to my brother and sister.”

“Which is?”

“Ours, and for no one to learn about.” I send her a warning glare. “Steady sex, I’ll think about it…are you volunteering?”

She cackles, and as her eyes brighten, a delightful emotion runs through my veins. It doesn’t bother me that she’s laughing at my expense.

“Tell me, Jacob, in this scenario of yours, am I also handing you my ass?” She scans around and sets her eyes on mine. “You’re my client. I never cross that line with clients.”

“Clear your roster and dedicate yourself to me,” I suggest, and she laughs harder.

“Am I entertaining you?”

“You’re funny. Afraid not. You’re not my only one. I don’t have many right now, but I have to finish the projects I have.” She takes off her boots and places her well-manicured feet up on the couch under her. “You and the Bradleys are my only long-term projects, but I can’t turn down the short-term ones. We need the money. Yes, the retainer you and your sister gave me helped with paying all the medical bills I had pending from Mom’s illness, and a lot of Dad’s, but we still have a long way to go.”

“How’s Mae?”

“She’s doing well. There’s so much out there now to help her with her immune system and her lung capability.” She bites her cheek. “Mae might out-live me too. The only reason she stays at home is to keep an eye on Dad. He responds better to her.”

“So, sex?” I want to lighten the atmosphere; the intensity is going to choke me. “You have anyone special at the moment?”

“Of course, I have a line of suitors outside my house on a daily basis.” The playful laugh appears. “Because I’m such a catch. Let’s see, I live at my parents’, I’m broke, fat, and I care for my mentally ill father. That screams attractive.”

“I won’t succumb to your trap.” Pria tilts her head and bites her smirk. “You want me to tell you that you’re crazy, because you’re in fact, perfect. Any man would be lucky to have this strong, courageous girl who takes care of her family. And to top it all off, you’re pretty and hot.”

“You wouldn’t be caught dead with someone my size.”

“You’re right. I would never in a million years get caught having sex with you,” I confirm; then confess why I wouldn’t. “I’m a selfish asshole. That means that I’d never let anyone else see you naked, see how your eyes illuminate when you’re in a sex haze, or come close to you while I possess you. In fact, I’ve played a few scenarios in my mind of how to find that Robbie and make him pay for touching my girl. But then I’m reminded that it isn’t like that anymore; that ‘us’ wasn’t real.”

Pria mirrors my stare. Lust and hunger. Matthew is right, Pria still affects me. She affects my mind, my heart—but not my soul. I’m soulless, unless she took it with her, as Matthew has always presumed, and tossed it away. I believed that for a year, which is where the “fucking bitch you’ll pay for leaving me” songs came from. I’m not proud of them.

Book Blurb

Aphrodite, goddess of love and lust, is not impressed. After giving up her penthouse suite in trendy Manhattan to go monster hunting around the world, she finds herself in a sad hotel room in Vancouver with a decidedly distracted Loki. She hadn’t expected this job to be so serious, and her Norse partner isn’t exactly bowing to her whims these days. What was the point in coming with him if they weren’t beneath the sheets all hours of the day? It seems like such a waste of sexual compatibility. Humph.

Meanwhile, Loki, Norse trickster, is equally unimpressed. He hadn’t thought taking on a beautiful partner would make his work so difficult. Her unfocused energy grates on his nerves, and his lust for her is only surpassed by his desire for more godly power. He will complete this job, whether she likes it or not, and he’ll walk away one step closer to regaining his old abilities. Now, if only he can get his partner to focus on the task at hand, not seduction. Ridiculous woman.

Aphrodite and Loki, an unlikely team if there ever was one, find themselves in the City of Vancouver hunting vampires. The job is pretty straightforward: rescue the damsel, kill the monster. Unfortunately, even the easiest of jobs hardly ever go according to plan.

excerpt

She took back everything she said about Vancouver’s beauty in the springtime. Not twenty minutes after Aphrodite stepped out of the shower, the skies opened—and stayed open. Rain and sleet threatened to ruin her gorgeous Louboutin pumps, ravenous winds destroyed her blown-out hair, and thunder made the car windows rattle. Loki seemed unperturbed by the weather; it wasn’t like the rain could make his hair look any less slicked back. She shot him a somewhat bitter look, but he missed it, his eyes on the road.

Still, he looked quite fetching, and she knew it was on purpose. He’d sent for his jacket to be ironed again after their tryst, and even removed the two studs in his ears. He’d donned a pricey wristwatch and polished leather shoes. To bring the whole look together, he’d smoothed down his wild hair and tied it in place. If she didn’t know any better, the man next to her could have been royalty—or at least an investment banker, which was practically the same in some circles. Her attraction heightened seeing him so well-kept, her lust revving up again with a mind of its own. It took every ounce of self-restraint not to ruin either of their outfits by climbing onto him just before they left.

And oh, how she’d desperately wanted to.

Aphrodite huffed miserably, brushing the rainwater off her coat and onto the seat of their rental car. It was absurd that neither of them had an umbrella, and even more ludicrous that the front desk staff didn’t have one to lend on hand. But at least her dress wasn’t sullied. She pulled down the visor and pushed the mirror cover aside. Loki groaned when she turned on the little light above the dashboard, and she batted his hand away when he tried to turn it off.

“You look fine.”

She shook her head, running her pinky under her eyelids to fix the slightly smudged eyeliner. “You were the one who made such a fuss about how I look tonight. You can’t be annoyed with me for doing the same thing.”

“I can’t see the road with the light on the window—”

“Well, it’s not like we’d actually die in a car crash, would we?” She ducked down to find the lipstick in her clutch. After running it along her lips twice, she puckered them, fixed them with a finger, and then switched the light off.

Loki reached for the radio.

She’d chosen black attire to match Loki, the only hint of colour coming from the red on her lips and the bottoms of her shoes. Her dress was fitted yet conservative: a high neckline, cut-off at mid-thigh, and sleeves to her elbows. Overall, Aphrodite thought she looked tantalizing. Loki had merely given her a nod of approval.

She’d never admit how much it bothered her that he didn’t openly drool over her, especially when she’d put effort into her look.

The rental car eventually slowed at a cul-de-sac, and Aphrodite did a quick sweep of the area—well, what she could see through the curtain of rain, anyway. It was an ostentatious neighbourhood in West Vancouver, one with perfectly trimmed hedges and an obscene amount of lawn between each house. The streetlights gave off a warm yellow glow, similar to the bedside lamps in their hotel room, and Aphrodite assumed this would be a comfortable area to raise a family in.

However, she guessed she’d smell the marital discord as soon as she stepped out of the car; that was always the way in these sorts of places. Hera would be more adept at finding a solution, surely, while Aphrodite was more inclined to revel in the stink of lust and jealousy.

“Now, when we’re in there, don’t be afraid to use those legs,” Loki instructed, placing a hand on her damp knee. “They look very nice in that dress.”

Ah, so he was capable of a compliment. She licked her lips and re-crossed her legs, shifting them out of his reach.

“Would you give that same instruction if your partner was a man?” She raised an eyebrow at him defiantly.

He chuckled. “If he had legs like yours, of course.”

Book Blurb

Joanna Halloran, a best selling writer and astrologer, lives in a beach house overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. After a violent storm, she roams the beach, glances seaward and spots a man clinging to a piece of wreckage, being tossed helplessly. She dives in and pulls him to safety. Robert Zachary Harrison is from a wealthy, political family. As he slowly recovers from a private plane crash, he and Joanna fall in love and spend passionate and secluded weeks together. But because of family duty, Robert departs, not knowing Joanna is pregnant.

Twenty five years later, Senator Robert Harrison is running for President of the United States. In the midst of a contentious presidential campaign, Joanna’s daughter, who has a passion to expose secrets, seeks revenge on her father she has never met.

She meets and falls in love with her father’s adopted son. As secrets emerge, Joanna and Robert meet again and confront the past and present. Robert confesses a secret that Joanna had never known. Now, on the world stage, they struggle to keep their families and careers from destruction.

excerpt

Joanna was placid, but inwardly blazing with desire. She opened the refrigerator door and reached for an open bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. She poured half a glass and drank liberally, to cool her parched throat and heated emotions.

Moments later, she was outside on the deck, glancing about. She finished the glass of wine and inhaled. With an intensity she’d accumulated since entering the house, she left the glass on the table and started off across the walkway, toward the staircase that led down to the beach.

Robert suddenly appeared, cresting the stairs, slightly winded. He stopped abruptly when he saw her. She stood breathless. Their eyes met. They heard the sea surging and loud.

Joanna’s sun-glazed appeal captured him.

Joanna saw his eyes light up on her as he approached. It was the expression she’d hoped for.

He lifted his arms toward the sky. “What a fantastic day. A day for gods and goddesses.”

She removed her sunglasses, looking at him with the flashing eyes of a new love. “So it is.”

She looked down at his blue swimming trunks, his bare hairy chest. His body was trim and firm, anchored with assertion into the earth. “Does the suit fit?”

He tugged at the elastic band. “Well enough.”

His blue eyes widened. “Crashed into the sea—the source of all life—reborn from the sea, a better man.”

She smiled a little. “So poetic.”

“Not bad for an old fighter pilot.”

“I got the clothes.”

He looked at her with clear, expectant eyes. “Shall I model them for you?”

She held the smile. Her expression was of someone who has just discovered a brand new passion.

There was a conspiratorial aspect to the moment, as they shifted positions and realized their growing commitment to the illegal yearnings of the heart.

“… Of course…”

Back at the house, Joanna removed the pants and shirts from the bags and handed them to Robert. They didn’t speak. When Robert left the living room to try on the clothes, Joanna sat, stood and paced with the adolescent body language of desire and nerves.

Robert emerged, feigning a playful, rakish charm, and their eyes danced and their faces grew flush. He stood in olive green Khakis and a yellow polo shirt, and for a moment, Joanna allowed herself to think that she and Robert would fall in love and grow old together. It was a thought she’d never had before; not this exceptional and private thought—not even with her first husband.

When Robert approached and leaned toward her, intimately, she grew in height. “Joanna…I don’t want to go just yet. I don’t want to call them…They’re out there—way out there—somewhere. I don’t want to go back. Not now.”

Joanna’s lips parted, as their private passion expanded. “Then don’t go back. Don’t ever go back.”

Joanna’s muscles softened. She leaned against the door of her heart and it opened, releasing the blazing light of desire that she’d tried to smother. She could already feel Robert’s breath on her. She could hear his voice in her ear, calling her name in the night. She could feel his hands exploring her, finding her, delighting her.

It was clear, in that little doorway of light, that she’d always wanted him. She would reach for him and close the door behind them.

His face moved close to hers. She felt his warm breath. She felt the raw sexual power of him, silently reaching for her. His lips lightly brushed hers. She shivered. She ached for him. Her eyes went vague and unfocused and she closed them, feeling the sting of tears when his tongue slipped between her lips and probed her mouth.

She traced his cheekbones with her hand, touched his hair and ears, fading from consciousness to a rising ecstasy. He broke the kiss gently, and reached for her hand.

They touched, kissed and scattered clothes through the house as they fumbled their way toward his room—toward the teenage bed. By the time Joanna had released her bra, and stood proudly naked, she was stammering with passion, kissing him and running her hands through his wiry chest, caressing his shoulders, pressing him into her.

The thug, as mom would’ve called him. A man with a bad boy attitude and a heart bigger than the ocean.

excerpt

“I can’t explain much,” I whisper, afraid I’ll wake up Jacob or his brother. Snuggling under the blankets of his bed, I continue my conversation with Maeve. “Please just be happy for me, Mae. I need a couple of days.”

“Can’t or won’t explain?” Maeve whispers back with an irritating tone. It’s ten in the morning, and a sharp edge glides through my chest. Mom must be around. “I’m risking my skin here, Pree. I deserve to know what you’re going to be doing those two days.”

Risking her skin—as if. Mae has our parents eating out of her hand, but I yield to her drama and approach her in a different way. “Later, I swear. But help me out here. It’s just for a couple of days. Without you this won’t work. After all, this was your brilliant idea.”

Giddiness brews inside me as I envision the moment when we’ll discuss Jacob and his sweet, passionate kisses. My Friday night deserves better than a quick chitchat over the phone. It deserves to be told over a pint of ice cream. Agreeing to her demands wouldn’t do justice to what I experienced, which I can describe as life-changing and utterly exhilarating. From this moment forward, any guy who kisses me will be measured against his skills.

Ah, Jacob!

A creaky noise forces me to uncover my head and check the source of the disturbance. Dreamy, handsome Jacob approaches the bed sporting that signature cocky smile I’m beginning to really dig. I’m crushing hard. He holds a tray containing some food.

“Hey, sis, I have to go.” I don’t wait for her to say a thing and end the call.

“Did you clear the weekend?” Jacob asks, lowering the tray on top of the bed. Yummy. Pancakes, blueberries and orange juice. Eagerly I nod. “Good,” his face lights up. “I have plans for us. Did you have a good night’s sleep?”

“Yeah, where did you sleep?” Around three in the morning we came back downstairs; he handed me a T-shirt, showed me his room, and left for the night.

“With my brother.” He slides next to me, gives me a chaste kiss on the lips, and takes one of the glasses. “Yesterday I promised not to cross any lines unless you wanted me to. Wait, I forgot. Is there something specific you’d rather do today?”

I ponder his question. Mae didn’t confirm, but I’ll risk it and assume she’ll cover for me. Today I can do so many things, but…

“Mind if we head to my dorm room? I don’t have any clothes with me.” I cut a piece of pancake with a fork and take a bite. They don’t have syrup, but they taste mapley. “Who cooked?”

“I did. I’m a man of many talents.” He downs his juice, grabs his plate from the tray, and begins to eat. But not before giving me a kiss that curls my toes, my fingers, my hair, and my heart. “Yes, we can hit the dorm, pick up your crap, and start our fun weekend. Any requests? Or do you want me to choose today’s activities?”

I shrug due to my lack of coherent words. The combination of magnetic eyes, musky scent, firm features, shirtless torso, and that kiss prevents me from putting together a sentence. It’s the effort I make to stop myself from drowning in those blue pools.

“Pool.” I slam a hand against my mouth. Idiot. “Maybe tomorrow we can head to the pool?” Nice save, Pria.

“You’re fucking kidding me!” I hear a scream coming from another part of the apartment. “Where’s my freshly squeezed juice? My breakfast?”

“Oh, the owl is grumpy today. Mind if he joins us?” I tilt my head to observe him. “He’s great at packing shit.”

I roll my eyes as I look around, because if the debris on the floor, along with the dirty and clean clothes hanging from the scant furniture they own is any indication, I could do better without their packing skills.

“Yeah, why not. It’ll be fun.” I regret those words the moment they leave my mouth. Jacob’s fun, but his brother might be the entire opposite.

Silence hung heavily over the phone lines. “Lucy? Lucy, are you all right?” “Um, I am.” Lucy peered into the gathering gloom nervously.

Her heart sank. Nothing outside the car had changed. The dark thing spread across the snow was definitely human shaped. The object near the human thing, wheels spinning senselessly, was the bicycle it had been riding. Riding, until someone had opened their door on it. And that someone was her. “I’ve gotta go.”

“What was that noise?”

“I doored a cyclist.”

“You what?” There was nothing dulcet or dreamy about Mads and her smoky vocal chords now.

“It seems I doored a cyclist. I’m going to have to go now.”

“Is the cyclist okay?”

“It’s moving.” Lucy stepped from the car, shut her door, and took a ginger step forward.

A soft noise rode the steady sibilance of the wind. “And I think that’s it groaning.” She held the phone out nervously at the bipedal stain in the snow. “Can you hear it?”

“I can’t hear anything but this howling noise. That’s not it, is it?”

“Nope.” Lucy was reasonably sure on this point. “That’s the wind.”

“Fuck, Illinois.”

“I know, right?” Lucy took a half shuffle closer. “I think it’s a him.”

“How do you know it’s a him? Can you see its face?”

“Nope.” Lucy blinked away a sloppy snowflake. “But it’s either a man or a very large woman, with a butt that looks like a man.” And she certainly noticed the taut, muscular lines of his thighs and ass. She tilted her head to the side to get a better look. Those were male and not too bad, current situation aside. The Thinsulate pants could not be doing much good against the cold, because they left very little to the imagination. The figure on the ground moved again and rolled carefully onto his back. Yup, that was very definitely a he and not a she.

“Uh-huh, it’s a him,” she clarified for Mads without taking her eyes off the cyclist. “Excuse me? Are you all right?”

The cyclist cursed softly.

Lucy inched a little closer, ready to launch a heroic retreat into her childhood home if the injured party got pissed at her, the front steps of which loomed tantalizingly close. Coward. Lucy tried to master her yellow streak. “Should I call nine-one-one?”

“Does he look like he needs an ambulance?” Mads asked.

“I’ll ask him.” Lucy raised her voice. “Are you hurt? Should I call nine-one-one?”

The man on the ground moaned and struggled into a sitting position.

Her victim didn’t look all that injured or dangerous, yet.

He stretched out his legs with a hiss.

“I think he’s getting up,” Lucy whispered into the phone.

“Then he can’t be too badly hurt, right?” Mads sounded hopeful. “Any blood? Exposed bones? That sort of thing?”

“I don’t see any blood.” Lucy leaned forward and peered. Now that the cyclist was moving she didn’t want to risk getting any closer. “No bones either. I think that means he might be all right.”

“I can hear you,” he spoke.

“He can hear me,” Lucy reported to Mads. “Oh.” She stopped talking and stared.

“That’s good.” Mads kept it positive.

“I think he’s going to be okay,” Lucy whispered.

The cyclist ignored her and started unbuckling his helmet.

“It’s a good thing he wore a helmet,” Lucy reported into her phone.

“Why?” Mads whispered back.

“Because it’s sort of . . . busted up.”

“And his head?”

“Seems fine.” Lucy stood on her toes for a better look. “Are you sure you’re all right?” Her voice shook slightly as she risked speaking to the cyclist.

“No thanks to you.” The man examined his helmet. He shook his head angrily.

“I didn’t see you.” Lucy kept her tone conciliatory. “You came out of nowhere.”

“Then perhaps you should stop talking on the phone and concentrate on what you’re doing.”

Lucy froze. She knew that voice. “Ah shit.”

The cyclist whipped off his goggles and tucked them into his helmet in short, angry movements.

“This is going to get ugly.” She hadn’t realized she’d spoken out loud until Mads replied.

“Well,” Mads huffed, outraged on her behalf. “Okay, I know you hit the guy with your door. But for the love of God, what kind of dork rides a bike in a snowstorm?”

The wind dropped just then and Mad’s voice squawked out of Lucy’s phone loud and clear. The cyclist jerked his head up and Lucy swore again. All the way west in Seattle, Mads had no idea. Lucy ignored the steady stream of rationalizations coming through the phone as her stomach sped south, into her boots.

“Bye,” she whispered and hung up.

The man in the snow had gone dead still. His gaze locked on her like a heat-seeking missile. And Lucy knew he knew that she knew and he knew that she knew he knew. Or something. Her mind went blank. There must be something to say in situations like this, but she had nothing. She stared at him and he stared right back.

“What the hell are you doing here?” All things considered it was a very reasonable question. His tone and the glare he bent her way shot to hell any vague hope she might have held that Richard had learned to forgive and forget.

“Hello, Richard.” Her voice hit the loaded air in a strangled squeak.

His voice was deeper than she remembered, but she would have known it anywhere. Nine years was not long enough to forget any of the small details she could now make out.

Snow powdered one side of his face and stuck to his eyelashes. His face was leaner and the bones stronger and more decisive, but he was still Richard. Handsome in that Cary Grant, clean-cut, one-of-the-good-guys way. It had played havoc with her teenage heart and hormones. Her grown-up hormones were not dead to the appeal either. His eyes were the same pure, unadulterated cobalt. He blinked to clear snow from the dark veil of his lashes.

Lucy watched him with the helpless certainty that the light at the end of the tunnel was an oncoming train.

His head dropped forward almost onto his chest. He’d propped his elbows onto his knees.

She should say something to ease the tension, but she was clueless. She tucked her chin deeper into her scarf and waited.

“Tell me it’s not you,” he said, eventually.

She huddled deeper into her coat and tried a friendly smile. “I didn’t see you when I opened my door.”

“Ah, Christ.” A big man, he was surprisingly graceful as he rose to his feet, brushing snow off his butt and legs.

She should have recognized those. An hysterical bubble of laughter caught in her throat.

“This cannot be happening to me,” he rumbled without looking at her.

She really wanted to ask which part, but was equally sure she didn’t want to hear his answer. “Sorry,” she said, shrugging again. “I didn’t—”

“See me, yeah, I get it.” His beautiful blue eyes were colder than the snow seeping through her cheap boots. “What are you doing here, Lucy?”

It was like something out of Wuthering Heights. The wind howled, the snow drove against her face, and the large, lurking former love of her life glowered at her in a very Brontë-esque manner. Kate Bush started wailing her lament to Heathcliff in a dark corner of Lucy’s mind.

“I came for my mom.” She dropped her eyes first. “My dad is sick.”

Richard made a strangled sound in the back of his throat. “So, you rushed home to take care of Mom and Dad?” He didn’t wait for her reply, but bent to grab his bike and hauled it upright. He leaned over to examine it. Then gave up with a snarl of exasperation. “Perfect, fucking perfect.”

“My mom needs me.” It sounded lame. Richard shot her a look of clear skepticism. Okay, he thought so too. She was tempted to set him right and opened her mouth to do that. She shut it again. There was no easy explanation to this one.

He gave her one last scowl before he turned and stomped away. His feet drove small divots into the snow as he went, dragging his bike behind him. He didn’t look back, but strode toward the house next door. He tossed the helmet to one side. It hit the boards of the front porch with a broken splat. Lucy winced. The door slammed behind him with a resounding bang that made her jump. This was so not good.

It’s either the beginning or the end for Sadie James. She came to the small Adirondack town of Andora looking for a fresh start. One that didn’t include the pitying looks of strangers who saw her on the news. Only days into her new life and already she is in trouble. That is, unless the wolf in front of her was salivating at the sight of some other woman in the vast forest around her.

After killing his sister, Tyson searched for oblivion the only way he knew how to. As a wolf he could run from the life he left behind and become the animal he always was. The time between lucidness grows longer each times he surfaces. One day he won’t be able to come back at all. It was the only thing he looked forward to until a lost woman fell at his feet.

Sadie is in danger and she is blind to it. Although, it was never proven, Tyson always believed Jack was behind his sister’s ultimate demise. Now Jack has his sights set on Sadie. Can he fight the pull of the wild or will he let her face the wolves alone?

excerpt

The silence of the forest was almost worse than the sounds of fighting. It was so insanely loud with absolute nothingness. Emptiness sounded a lot like the last second before a roller coaster dropped over the first hill. For one brief second there was absolutely nothing. No thought. No breath. No sound beyond the beating of your own heart in your ears. But even that stops just before the decent begins. Right before you are pulled over, there is a complete sense of weightless nothingness. Too soon, you are half laughing half screaming with a smile so big bugs are getting caught in your teeth.

Was this the beginning of her decent?

In her musings, Sadie had missed the footsteps. Light and airy they floated over the few dried leaves and soft grass to stand beside her. The wolf’s presence soothed and excited her in her twisted mental state. While his tongue licked at her fingers and cold nose nudged at her arm, she became irritated.

“Didn’t your mother ever tell you to not play with your food?” she grumbled. Between her arm and the piece of moss she was laying on, Sadie looked at the wolf. It was the one from before, the one with the yellow eyes. She sighed momentarily with relief then remembered she was dinner before they were so rudely interrupted. He nudged her arm again and that’s when she looked at him, really looked. The wolf was no longer salivating and kind of looked wholesome now that his nose wasn’t scrunched up towards his eyes showing off his chompers. He sat his butt down in front of her and rested his head on his paws. Their noses were mere inches from each other. Behind him, she caught the tip of his tail wagging slowly from side to side.

“Hi.”

He raised his head and looked dignified and slightly abashed.

“So I take it I’m off the menu tonight?”

His mouth opened and his tongue flopped to the side as he panted.

“That’s not a very good confirmation.” She pushed up to her hands and knees and sat back on her feet. The wolf sat up as she did. They were the same height now and looking right in each other’s eyes. At this height he didn’t look like anything more than an oversized dog. His ears stood up straight with pointy little tips that looked like they were dipped in black paint. The line of dark fur on his face did, in fact, run the length of him. Sadie thought he looked a little like a skunk in reverse.

“If you’re not going to eat me can I go home?”

He stayed put. She took that as a yes and began to rise. Slowly, because he was a still a wolf and she didn’t want to spook him and end up losing a hand, Sadie rose to her feet and brushed off the bits of forest that clung to her shorts and t-shirt.

Once more, the wolf followed her lead and got to his feet. Without thinking, or a second glance, she turned on her heel and began to walk back to her house. This was the very last time she wondered this far from her place. If it was not within eye shot, she was too far away.

Lesson learned.

Shame on her.

Bad Sadie.

She stopped.

The soft padding of footsteps behind her stopped too.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” she said looking upward to the heavens. “Seriously?” She didn’t want to but glanced behind her anyway. Sure enough, the wolf stood a few paces behind her with a look of, “why’d we stop?” Groaning, she turned back around and continued to walk. She told herself that he was just being a gentleman and walking her home. Then she remembered he was a wolf and was probably just finding out where she lived so he could visit at some point for a midnight snack.

excerpt

When Hannah arrived at The Smiling Shark just before midnight, Vlad was waiting on the love seat, his arm resting along the back; a glass of wine was on the table. For a long moment, their gazes locked and Hannah drank in the sight of him.

“Is this what I’m doing to thank you?” she asked.

“Nyet,” he said. “That, I’m still deciding. This is because seeing you only this afternoon with your boys was not enough. Not after how we left things last time.”

“I didn’t like how we left things either. Especially since you might go home after talent night.”

He lifted his hand, inviting her to sit beside him. She settled into the circle of his arm, the brush of his fingertips against her bare shoulder making her skin tingle. Across the room, the bartender smiled.

“Getting eliminated wouldn’t be the worst thing,” Vlad said softly. “Except for leaving you.”

“What about the money?”

“Maybe I’ve changed my mind about how important it is to win.”

Did that mean he had changed his mind about trying to start a new life? Though she was disappointed, it shouldn’t come as a surprise. He hadn’t had a clear picture of what that new life might be, and it was hard to walk away from what one knew. Without an education, it would be hard for him to earn the sort of money he earned from stripping. She wouldn’t demean him by suggesting that he ought to “better” himself. Instead, she smiled and took his hand. “This show has changed my mind about a lot of things, too.”

“Jack?”

Her smile felt strained. “Once we’re back in New York, things between us will sort themselves out. Being here has made me see that so much of what I always believed wasn’t necessarily true. I mean, in twenty-four hours, I’ll be tap-dancing on live TV!”

“Feel ready for it?”

“I think so. You saw me rehearse. What do you think?”

“I think you move very well.”

“For a big girl, you mean.”

“Not at all. But you’re still not confident enough to look your audience in the eye.”

“Can you blame me?”

“You have no reason to doubt yourself, and showing confidence matters. In skating, the judges wanted to see we were not afraid to look right at them. It is even more important for me now. Ever seen a stripper afraid to make eye contact?”

“I’ve never seen a stripper at all.”

He blinked in surprise. “Really? Not even a fake cop dropping in on a bachelorette party?”

“My friends aren’t like that. We don’t get enjoyment out of degrading people.”

Vlad raised his brow. “Degrading them?”

She winced. “No, I didn’t mean it like that.”

“Sometimes, it does feel like I’m a piece of meat, and nothing else.” His voice was resigned.

“Vlad, I’m sorry.”

His touch reassured her that he didn’t take her comment personally. “No harm done. Still, the fact you have never seen an exotic dancer troubles me. I think we should remedy that right now.”

It took a moment to grasp his meaning. “You’re going to strip for me, here? Now?”

“If you’re only going to see one, might as well be the best.” He turned to the bartender. “Miguel, you don’t mind, right?”

The bartended laughed. “Oh, no, senor, I don’t mind at all.”

“First we need some music.” Vlad took her hand and led her across the room to the jukebox, where he perused the selections.

She was conscious of his strong hand still clasping hers. “What do you usually strip to? Disco?”

“Depends on the character I’m playing. I just did a routine to Lady Gaga’s ‘Applause,’ where I played a movie star. I’ve done construction workers, cops, the usual. You won’t get the full effect though, because I’m not wearing tear-off pants.”

This sounded intriguing. “There is such a thing? Where do you get them, Stripper Supply?”

He laughed. “It’s just normal pants cut up and held together with fasteners. Can’t be too tight though, or I’ll break out of them too early.”

Hannah shook her head. “The things you learn.”

“This song’s good.” He fed money into the slot and punched a number, then gestured at a nearby chair. “You sit here. And take out some money. I don’t do this for free, you know.”

His teasing wink made her laugh. “I didn’t bring any.”

He grabbed a cocktail napkin and folded it in half. “We’ll pretend.”

She took the napkin and settled back, imagining she was a customer at the club where he danced. As she sipped her wine, he braced his hands on the arms of the chair and whispered in her ear. “A private dance, just for you.”

A rush of heat spread through Hannah’s cheeks and her heart thrummed wildly as she gazed up into his chiseled features and warm, gold-flecked eyes. Deep within, the muscles below her belly tightened and quivered. Her mouth felt dry, despite the wine. This was unquestionably erotic, yet at the same time…safe. An experience enjoyed by millions of women, though never her. Until now. The sexiest man she had ever met was about to perform, and she didn’t have to share this moment with anyone else.

I love stories that give a fresh take on classic themes, and feature characters and locations not often seen in romance. Give me a lovable, if less-than-perfect heroine, a gorgeous hero with a heart of gold, take them a little off the beaten path and I’m a happy girl.

I read a variety of genres– romance to horror and just about everything in between. I am a member of Romance Writers of America. I have worked as a freelance journalist for a number of local publications and am a contributing writer to Romance Writers Report.

When I’m not writing, I love to ice skate, bike ride, hang out at the beach or on my front porch. I love vintage homes, adventurous cooking, spending time with my family and traveling.
