About the Book

image 1In 1986, twenty-three-year-old country girl Nora Brown decides it’s time for a change…

Complacent and bored with her life in rural Oklahoma, Nora leaves her bigoted father and all she’s ever known to pursue a new life in San Francisco. At the height of the AIDS epidemic, Nora, a registered nurse, believes she can be an asset to the community. Bunking in a tiny apartment with a longtime friend, Nora secures a job within a large hospital and begins volunteer work for an organization that cares for those afflicted with the disease.

She is soon faced with the horrors of AIDS—a reality she wasn’t quite prepared for…

Just as the courageous group of caregivers and volunteers have their emotional strength depleted to the point of no return, the group rallies together and pushes forward, remembering their mission—if they aren’t there for these people, who will be?

Nora wasn’t expecting to find him here, to “fall in love among the ashes…”

Along her journey, she meets a diverse community of lionhearted survivors. And then there’s Donald, another volunteer who fights alongside those with dwindling hope. Nora and Donald grow closer as the war on HIV rages around them.

They watch their friends waste to nothing, yet no answers are being offered. The only comfort is the solace they find in each other. After months of hardships, another crippling loss shakes the foundation of Nora’s faith.

Their struggle is not only about HIV/AIDS—but about how the nation responds, and the humanistic choice to be unsung heroes.

Book Review

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of COPPER LILLIES by Bradon Nave for the purpose of an honest review.

COPPER LILLIES by Bradon Nave is definitely a reminder of what it was like when the HIV/AIDS crisis was first brought to the attention of the world. Bradon Nave has written it as though he were there in San Francisco and witnessed it all first-hand!

Mr. Nave has written strong characters who are each very memorable for their strength and passion.

One of impressionable moment for me was the revealing of the reasoning for the book’s name:

“My garden,” he said solemnly.

“It’s beautiful.” I moved closer to him.

“I can’t really garden… and a real flower for each one of them would break me. Even a nickel for each one of them would break me. Real gardens die anyway. Flowers just fade and die,” the man said as he looked to me. The dim light’s reflection danced in his streaming tears as his haunting gaze seemed to steal my breath.

“I don’t know what you mean, Charley,” I forced from my throat. Witnessing my friend’s pain without knowing what was behind it was becoming unbearable.

“Each one represents one of them, Nora.”

“Who?”

“One of the countless faces in the newspaper that ends up in the trash. This is my memorial to them. This is my garden to them. This is their garden.”

Like a little girl on the playground, face down in the dirt after tripping over her shoestrings, I felt the wind knocked from my lungs— I couldn’t breathe. Each painted plant, each penny represented one of many that had lost their life to this horrendously cruel monster.

“Charley!” I blurted out. “There are so damn many!”

“I know! And I add more every week. Every week from our paper and New York’s.”

“You’re so beautiful. This is so beautiful. A penny rose garden?” I asked, assuming he’d named his masterpiece.

“No, they’re lilies. My favorite. They’re copper lilies.”

Nave, Bradon. Copper Lilies (Kindle Locations 1851-1866). Limitless Publishing LLC. Kindle Edition.

This exchange between Nora and Charley nearly took my breath away. As do many moments with deep emotional content in COPPER LILLIES!

Reading COPPER LILLIES took me back to that horrible time when HIV and AIDS was all so new and greatly feared.  No one, including the medical and scientific communities, truly knew much about the disease. So many ignorant people laid blame by singling out the gay community, calling it the “Gay Plague”. Homophobia was running as rampant as the disease itself. I learned by watching those around me, in small town America, how NOT to behave. Then in 1999, I learned how to deal with it from a beloved high school friend who die from AIDS related complications.

COPPER LILLIES is written very well. However, I believe the story could have been told without the copious use of profanity.

I give COPPER LILLIES by Bradon Nave four steaming hot Room With Books coffee and recommend you read it if you have the stomach for a high dose of reality!

Excerpt

I was lucky I had him. I didn’t move to San Francisco in search of love. I would frown upon someone for falling in love among ashes. Perhaps I wasn’t actively seeking love; rather, longevity.

It seemed nothing was solidified; nothing was guaranteed to return a smile the following day. Even if it were not my pain, per se, to simply witness the pain of loss from afar was enough to plummet my ailing psyche back into the pit it was attempting to crawl out of. Donald was my rope. A thin rope at first, but our threads were growing in number. I had to be sure I didn’t hang myself.

After spending the rest of the day together, Donald and I ended our day’s adventure in the confinements of his bedroom. He laid me down on his bed, gently kissing my neck, and I knew without a doubt that the interaction would go no further than heated kissing and clothed entanglement. I made that abundantly clear prior to his closing of the bedroom door.

There would be no raunchy stories for Gwen to salivate over the following morning. I didn’t feel dirty, and for once the oppression of guilt momentarily subsided. I was allowed to find mild pleasure without feeling disgraceful or distasteful.

His touch brought a rush similar to the feeling I’d experienced on country Oklahoma roads with local high school all-stars a few years prior, but there was something much more.

The physical effects he had on my body were coupled with the idea that he might be something solid. That he might be there day after day. That he might not fade away.

“You’re beautiful,” he whispered.

“You’re hairy,” I replied hastily, evoking a chuckle. “You’re beautiful too.”

“Beautiful?” He momentarily halted the tongue massage on my neck.

“Handsome. Hairy and handsome.”

“And a distraction?”

The question caught me off guard.

Initially I assumed he’d be little more than that, a distraction. A distraction from everything going on around me. Gradually, I had accepted the idea that exploring realms beyond friendship and preoccupation with this gentleman was something I could be okay with.

“No.Yes and no. What am I?”

“A girl,” he said playfully, scanning my face for hints.

“You’re not just a distraction. Something to take my mind off of Buddies and the hospital, yes; but I like you.”

“Me too.”

“You too?”

“I like you. But you’re my escape. Sometimes I feel like there’s no escape. I can either close my eyes and see their faces, see Toby’s face, or I can see yours. I miss him. Maybe I miss him too much.” His eyes were dry yet flooded with pain.

There was no way the average farm boy from rural Texas could digest losing one of his closest friends in such a short period of time. Had he been back home and his buddy been killed in an accident, Donald would have had monumental support and guidance throughout the grief process. Here, everyone had a Toby, a Logan, all of our friends were losing friends. Attempting to share feelings with our social group would only add turmoil to their grief-stricken lives.

“I can be that. I’d like to be that,” I muttered as I kissed him.

The passion left our fingertips quicker than it mounted in them. He ran the tip of his index finger under my eye, tracing it to my earlobe. It was as if we bottled the explosive emotions for another night and took comfort in companionship. I wasn’t trying to be a hero, but I certainly wasn’t trying to write a love story either. At this point, I was comfortable moving through this experience with this person and allowing myself a temporary reprieve from my constant over analyzing—whatever happens, happens—just let it be, and it will be.

Excerpt

Alex’s hand came up slowly to cradle the side of her face, encouraging her to tilt her head, and she did. He deepened the kiss then, his tongue running across her lips and coaxing them to open for him. She opened with a sigh, and his tongue swept into her mouth, gently tasting. She kissed him back in return, leaning into him until she had one hand braced against his hard chest.

A needy moan escaped her, and he responded in kind. When he lifted his mouth from hers, she almost tipped into him, her knees not holding her upright anymore and her head spinning. Wow.

She took not one, but several long breaths to clear her head, looking down at a black and tan face staring up at her with soulful, dark eyes. Souze wasn’t shy about watching, apparently.

The thought brought her the rest of the way to her senses, because weird. Yeah. Weird.

She took a step back, and Alex let her. He’d done that since the beginning. Letting her go if she wanted. So why was it so hard to leave now even if she kept saying she should?

“Thank you,” she told him, not looking up into his eyes.

“But?” Alex’s voice came cool, deep, and so sexy it just wasn’t fair.

“But I should go. Especially because this is obviously not a professional thing now.”

“No. But none of your previous employers particularly cared if you left, did they?” He sounded reasonable. “Did they bother to try to check on you?”

“Not that I know of.” She said it slowly. She’d had her phone with her, and she’d been checking her e-mail. Both big mistakes, she knew now. But she’d been paid under the table and they didn’t really have a way to contact her after she disappeared.

“I think that’s a little odd.” Rojas lifted his hand, giving her plenty of time to avoid him, and brushed her hair back from her face. “Maybe this time, it wouldn’t hurt to have someone care about whether you disappear.”

About the Book

Sarah Bennett doesn’t remember the night her mother tumbled down the stairs at Bennett House, despite allegedly witnessing the fatal fall. There was talk of foul play, dark whispers, and sidelong glances, all aimed at Sarah, prompting her family to send her to The Laurels, an exclusive asylum in San Francisco, under a cloud of suspicion. Now, on the one-year anniversary of her mother’s murder, Sarah has been summoned home. Convinced of her innocence, she returns to Bennett House, hoping to put the broken pieces of her life back together. But when another murder occurs shortly after her arrival, Sarah once again finds herself a suspect, as she is drawn into a web of suspicion and lies.

In order to clear her name, Sarah must remember what happened the fateful night her mother died. But as she works to regain her memory, the real murderer watches, ready to kill again to protect a dark family secret.

The Spirit of Grace is similar to the Gothic style of Victoria Holt and Phyllis A. Whitney.

Excerpt

I had just put the silver away and was in the process of laying the used dish towels near the stove so they could dry overnight, when I saw Zeke in the back corridor. Something stopped me from speaking to him or asking what he was doing back here. He must have gone upstairs and come back down again on the servant’s staircase, which no one ever used except Anca and me.

I ducked behind a huge parka and watched as Zeke bent over Grace’s camera bag, unzipped it, and slipped out a black canister of film, all in one quick fluid motion. After he did that, he took another canister of film out of his pocket and slipped that into the camera bag in place of the film he had taken. He didn’t see me standing in the shadows spying on him. He headed back up the stairs, his footsteps quiet as passing time.

I walked back into the foyer and up the main staircase to my own room. Once inside, I locked the door behind me. I changed out of the black dress, fumbling with one hand. The image of Zeke switching the film in Grace’s camera bag ran over and over in my head. I tried to convince myself that he hadn’t been doing anything harmful. Maybe he just needed to borrow some film. But I knew what I had seen. I knew what I had heard this afternoon—Zeke speaking flawless German on the telephone.

The magic I had felt earlier, the possibility of a future with him had been clouded now. Our future together wouldn’t be a happy one. How could it be? I had fallen in love with a spy.

Exclusive Excerpt

I stare up at the house for a moment, my hands shaking on the steering wheel, wondering what I’ve got myself into. I do some breathing exercises to calm down, pick up the box, and get out of the car. I can barely stand, my legs are so wobbly.

Maybe I’m working myself up over nothing. So what if the woman in the picture looks like me? It could be a coincidence.

Or maybe, just maybe…

I walk slowly up the driveway and knock on the door, my heart racing. After a couple of minutes, I knock again. Maybe they aren’t home? Maybe they didn’t hear me? I try the doorbell.

After a minute, I hear heavy, muffled footsteps.

Oh god. I should have worn a better outfit. I quickly smooth my hair with my free hand and stand a bit taller. Am I going to meet my birth mother? Or, at the very least, an aunt or something? Or my grandmother? Although, if someone cared enough to take these pictures and put them in an album, why would they throw them away? Is that the sort of person I want to meet?

The door swings open. The person standing in front of me is most definitely not a granny.

“Can I help you?” he asks as he rubs his eyes.

“Oh, I, umm…”

My brain has stalled.

He shouldn’t be the most beautiful man I’ve ever seen. But for some reason, he is. He looks like he’s in his late twenties, maybe early thirties. He isn’t wearing anything that spectacular, just a plain T-shirt and fleece pants. And his dark eyebrows are a bit thick for my liking.

But those lips…thin on top, full on the bottom, framed by a cleft chin and dark stubble. And those brown eyes fringed with black lashes…

He blinks. “Okay, then. Well, if that’s all…” He starts to close the door.

“Does this belong to you?” I yelp. I shove the box into his chest. He takes a half step back and sneezes as the dust flies up around him.

He frowns. “Is this the crap I took to the thrift store?” With a confused look on his face, he hands the box back to me and crosses his arms. He leans on the door frame, making his biceps strain against his T-shirt. His entire left arm is covered in swirling blue and green tattoos. “How did you find where I live?” he asks cautiously. He has a hint of an accent. Scottish, maybe?

I roll my eyes. “Don’t flatter yourself, I’m not stalking you.”

He smirks. “Good. I’ve already got too many stalkers.”

Can a man and woman be “just friends?”

After graduating from law school with honours, Edwin Santora, Abigail’s occasional ex and handsome housemate, could get a job anywhere he wants. When Edwin’s macho arrogance begins to seriously affect her dating life, Abigail starts to reconsider their friendship; not that Edwin believes a man and woman can be “just friends” anyway.

With Edwin’s swoon-worthy stunts and fierce persistence, Abigail finds herself catching feelings. When Edwin makes a friendly proposal, no-strings-attached, Abigail can’t resist.

After some sexy role playing, she finds herself dangerously in love and wrapped back up in Edwin’s powerful grip. When Abigail risks everything, revealing a treacherous little secret, will their friendship pass the test? Or will they give in to the mysterious forces trying to drive them apart?

EXCERPT

Edwin Santora’s eyes were on me the second our solid wood door clunked shut. After kicking off my shoes and giving a silent wave to my brooding, shirtless roommate, I rushed directly upstairs taking two steps at a time.
Within seconds, Edwin was flying up the stairs behind me, all brawn and pride. He stalked me down the hall, his large agile physique a shadow of stealth.
No matter how smooth Edwin thought he was, I could always sense when he was lurking around.
I disappeared into the bathroom, ignoring his approach, heart still racing, cheeks flushed with a healthy glow. It had been way too long and it was time for me to move on with my life. The days of Edwin and I were over and I had finally faced that fact. For that reason, I trusted my matchmaking to an eager co-worker. What else could I do? I didn’t seem to have any luck finding myself a man.
Edwin filled the doorframe with his imposing shoulders. “Where are you going all dolled up like that?”
I should have slammed the door shut behind me while I had the chance. The last thing I needed now was Edwin giving me a hard time. It had been months since my last date and let’s just say that it’s not possible for this one to go any worse than that one had.
After carefully touching up my mascara in the mirror, I twirled around to face him, my glossy, brown hair fanning out behind me. “I got a date!” I smiled from honest excitement, but I really didn’t have time to chat about it.
“Who is he?” Edwin pried.
“You don’t know him.”
Edwin’s chest flexed under my warm gaze, his abs held tight, sculpted from stone. Oh, I love watching him sweat. He narrowed his aqua eyes in response to my devious smile. Then, as if on cue, the doorbell rang.
I made my way to the bathroom door, but Edwin boxed me out with his hip and took off ahead of me. He hurried down the hall with swift, powerful strides, every muscle in his body twitching with adrenaline. There was no point in trying to fight him for the front door. He had me beat.
“Do you think you could put on a shirt, Eddie? Please?”
Edwin shuffled down the stairs and ignored my request. “I’ll get it,” he hollered. He was all too eager to answer the door and his mischievous grin gave away his greedy intentions.
“Edwin, be good!” I warned, stopping at the top of the open staircase.
“What? I’m always good.” He flashed me a sly smile and raised his dark arched eyebrows.
I knew it meant trouble, as the butterflies danced nervously in my tummy. Edwin had better not blow this one too. He had a tendency of scaring away my dates. It was getting old. I clung to the wooden post, hoping the poor guy would pass the test.
Edwin opened the front door ever so slightly and started in on his usual act, deliberately blocking my view. Bastard. Then he cracked the door open a little farther, teasing, his generous back still in the way.
He folded his bulging arms over his impressive chest and stared down at my date with eyes dark and voice low. “Can I help you?” he asked firmly, acting all macho.
I nearly burst out laughing and had to hide the smile on my face to show that I was not amused. Even if I was.
“Is this the home of Abigail Jenkins?” the poor guy asked, hesitantly.
“Yes,” Edwin answered, but he didn’t invite him in.
“Edwin!” I warned, scowling at his back. I’d had enough. As I started down the stairs to intervene, I struggled to interpret their mumbling. It was time that I took things into my own hands.

Audrey Scott is more upset for her jilted cousin than for the best man who supposedly disappeared and caused the cancellation of the wedding. That is, until the cops come around looking for him on suspicion of murder. When that very same best man, Foster McGuire, ends up bleeding in Audrey’s closet, she has no choice but to try and get him off the hook for a crime he didn’t commit.

Audrey is no detective. In fact, she’s a children’s librarian. However, there’s always room for some good old investigation work between story times, and she’s going to use the skills she knows to follow a trail that starts with murder and ends with betrayal, with a whole lot of guns in between.

I pulled out the flowers and hefted the vase, which had to weigh a good twenty pounds.  All the while, the intruder stood in the closet and breathed. What the heck was he doing in there? Trying on my clothes? I turned on the closet and had to stifle a hysterical laugh. I was like a bad game of Clue. Audrey in the closet with the rose vase.

When she finally glanced up and saw me, she held out a bundle of paper and gave me the evil eye. “He made me eat a hot dog with him.”

It wouldn’t have sounded like much, but I certainly wouldn’t have wanted to have lunch alone with Step-Ted, even at a hot dog cart in broad daylight. “You’re the best. Did you read it?”

She glared at me, not bothering to hide her disdain. Of course she wouldn’t. Gretchen didn’t believe in hiding anything at all. “No. I’m going to go home and take seven baths, then burn everything you own.”

With that, she gave me a mock salute, dropped her phone in her purse and disappeared into the crowd. “Thanks!” I called after her, positive that she’d have forgotten how annoying Step-Ted, and I, were by dinner.

ecoverBOOK SYNOPSIS

Some things in our lives we don’t put much thought into because we either think they don’t hold much importance, or maybe, we just don’t want to put in the effort to find out just how wrong our little worlds are.

My name is Sadie, and this is how I have survived all eighteen years of my life. I have ignored the things that I shouldn’t have, and didn’t ask the questions I should have. I am a Norm. Just an average Joe, living in a world obsessed with genetic enhancements.

He… he is everything. Gorgeous, smart, and a Norm as well. He is also my new science teacher. And when he came into our small little to, hell came with him.

I have an obsession with anything people consider odd and I can never get enough knowledge. I have an Associate’s degree in Business Management and I work full time as an account specialist.

When I’m not working or writing I am busy being a wife to the best husband of the freaking universe and mother to 3 majorly awesome kids! Reading, Xbox, cooking and WINE just barely scrape the surface of my favorite things. Everyone who knows me will say I am a nerd… and I would agree. Want to know a secret? I am a super hero. book blurb

When reporter Sherry Wilson-Wong wakes up in bed with ballet bad-boy Alexi Davydenko, she knows she’s crossed the line. But the dancer with the body of Apollo and the panty-removing stare wasn’t talking, so what choice did she have? Playing his little drinking game – a shot and a kiss for every answer – seemed like the perfect way to loosen his sexy lips. She gets her story, he gets his fun, win-win. But his answers only lead to more questions. And Alexi wants more than fun.

Investigating into the ballet company’s shadowy secrets, Sherry learns that the beauty on stage masks ugly dealings, some of which seem to bear Alexi’s signature. But the more truths she exposes, the more lies she is forced to tell herself.

That digging up dirt on a company with ties to the Russian mob isn’t dangerous. That licking every inch of Alexi’s naked body while hunting down evidence of his guilt isn’t a conflict of interest. That with each touch, each kiss, she isn’t falling deeper in love with the very man who could destroy her.

excerpt

Alexi put his mug down and stood in front of her, tilting her face up with one hand. “Yes, I must rehearse, and yes, you must write. But there is no need to run away like a scared little girl from the wolf.” He bent down to kiss her.

Sherry wanted that kiss more than she wanted her Venti skim latte, and with her throbbing head, that was a lot. But she put her hand on his bare chest, stopping him.

He looked at her, confusion dawning in his eyes, followed quickly by hurt. He stepped back. “Oh. I see. You have your story now.” His voice was cold.

“It’s not like that,” she said. Was this just a case of bruised ego, or was he genuinely hurt? She flashed back to what the bartender said about the type of girls Alexi normally brought to the bar. Party girls, he said.

“So what is it like?” He turned away from her, looking out the window.

She reached out a hand to put it on his shoulder, the one with the tattoo of Tolstoy’s face on it, but thought better of it. “Look, Alexi. I’ve already crossed more ethical boundaries than I’m comfortable with.”

“To get your story.” His voice was flat, his arms crossed over his chest.

“Hey, it’s my job to get the story. I came ready to interview you like I interview all my subjects. The vodka, the kisses, that was your game.”

He turned suddenly, his green gaze pinning her. She couldn’t look away. “You didn’t want to play?”

“No. I mean, yes. I did…” she started.

He moved closer to her, his hand cupping her jaw. “I know you did. I think you still want to,” he whispered, his breath warm on her cheek. His lips touched hers, softly at first, questioning. When she parted her lips in response, he opened them wider, reaching for her tongue with his. Liquid. Melting. From her mouth all the way down to her softest, most private parts.

He pulled back slightly. “Do you want to play, Sherry?”

She was having a hard time regulating her breath. He was so close. She put her hands on his chest, but not to hold him back. She ran her hands over his chest, nipples hard under her palm, then down over the ridges of his abs. She hooked her fingers into his waistband pulling him toward her in response to his question. She wanted to play any game he had in mind as long as it involved what was under his pants, ethics be damned.

“Yes,” she said.

Sherry kicked back at him, landing a blow to his shin, but he just tightened his grip and bit her ear, hard.

His lips touched hers.

Don’t be a Dick

This is an idea I can stand behind!

I’ve recently stumbled into a bit of controversy in my career as a romantic comedy author. A couple of months ago I released an much anticipated sequel to a bestselling book. As a result, some of my fans are infuriated with me, as in spitting, hock-a-loogie mad. As in, “I’m never reading your books again, you horrible woman…” irate.

Every author receives negative views, it’s expected. It’s almost a rite of passage to get your first 1-star review on a new release. Yet I’ve noticed a trend lately. There’s a new nastiness to reviews that didn’t seem to exist before social media became our “go-to” avenue of communication. It’s been a human characteristic since Aesop– familiarity breeds contempt.

Once upon a time, when the only way to communicate with an author, was to write them a letter and send it to their publisher, people didn’t unleash their vitriol so freely…

About the Book

LOVE IS AN ACT OF BRAVERY

Retired Navy SEAL Alex Rojas is putting his life back together, one piece at a time. Being a single dad to his young daughter and working at Hope’s Crossing Kennels to help rehab a former guard dog, he struggles every day to control his PTSD. But when Elisa Hall shows up, on the run and way too cautious, she unleashes his every protective instinct.

Elisa’s past never stays in her rearview mirror for long, and she refuses to put anyone else in danger. But with Alex guarding her so fiercely yet looking at her so tenderly, she’s never felt safer . . . or more terrified that the secrets she keeps could put countless people in grave peril. The only way for both to fully escape their demons will take the ultimate act of courage: letting go and learning to trust each other.
