Micah soon learns, however, that Eden is the one thing Semjaza wants more than anything, and he will go to great lengths to obtain her.

Torn between fulfilling his mission and not wanting to leave the ones he cares about, Micah must learn what it truly means to be the captain’s seer. Eden’s friends will be tested as they try to protect her, while each one of them discover there may be more to their gifts than they’d thought. Excerpt

from Holy and the Fallen by Amanda Strong

“Gabriel?” Eden called softly. It was late, she knew she should be sleeping, but talking about him today with her parents had left a void in her heart. Her once again, one-sided conversations were not as comforting as they used to be.

“I guess I got a bit spoiled seeing you so much,” she admitted, staring off into the distance. “You probably ran straight to the angel council and told them to fix it so I couldn’t. Was it that bad? Me seeing you?”

She felt nothing and sighed. “I know you said it made things complicated.”  Again nothing.

“Gabriel? Hey, are you there still?” She tried to push the panic down and gripped her blankets tighter.  Nothing.

Now her eyes roamed her room, darting to her floor just to make sure there were no claws coming out from under her bed. She knew she was being ridiculous. He was always there. Maybe she wasn’t focusing on the good feeling. Maybe if she just held still and stopped freaking out, she’d feel the calmness and know he was there.   Maybe…

She felt something else. A cold, draining sensation in her back. It spread down her limbs, leaving her wrist searing in pain. Eden doubled over, gripping her arm to her chest.

“Gabriel!” she gasped. She peeked down just to make sure no blood oozed out. Her flesh remained intact, pink and healthy, but her insides screamed, like her bones were being snapped in two. Pain rocketed her whole frame, shooting from two points of origin—where the demon had nearly bitten her hand off and where Oeillet’s staff had punctured her back.

She curled into a fetal position, hugging her knees, pinching her eyes shut, trying to manage the agony. When her lungs refused to fill with air, she panicked. Oh my gosh! I’m suffocating! She tried to scream for help, but nothing came out but mangled sounds. Hot pain coursed through her chest, wrapping around her heart like fingers made of fire. What’s happening! She saw no demon, no staff protruding from her heart, but it felt like one was there.

Gabriel, where are you?

“Eden!” a voice bellowed at the same time white light shot through her room. Arms wrapped around her and pulled her from her bed. A hand brushed hair from her face, clearing her vision. Bright blue eyes gazed back at her, practically buried under the furrowed brow line.

“Gabriel,” she gasped through gritted teeth.

“Eden, what’s wrong?” While holding her, his eyes scanned her body. “What’s happened to you? Where are you hurt?”

She clutched at her chest and tried to speak, but nothing came out. His eyes widened. With one swift motion, he laid her down and placed both hands on her head. Shutting his eyes, he moved his hands down her frame, lightly touching her shoulders, arms, wrist, back, and torso. He stopped where the staff had punctured her months ago. A stream of fluid words came from his mouth, none of which she understood.

“Curses,” he muttered in English. “I should’ve known.”

EXCERPT

Shark Boss by Kathy Bosman

A granola bar gulped down while half-running, half-walking gave her instant heartburn. The ache in her throat intensified when the first person she encountered as she stepped into the tank area was Carter. He wore a black suit again with a red tie, perfectly pressed and contrasting against his mahogany brown hair tinged with a few gray streaks by the ears. He scowled at her and looked at his watch. Her breath disappeared. Why did he have to be so handsome? No way would she be duped by an attractive older guy again, like before, and get thoroughly burned.

“Two minutes late.”

“I’m sorry. I’ll make up for it by working a bit extra.”

A sheen of perspiration beaded his upper lip, and she could swear his hair looked a bit wet that morning. Had he also rushed out the shower? So why couldn’t he understand her being a few minutes late?

“You’re not to work overtime. Ever.” He narrowed his eyes at her. “You understand that?”

“Oh. Why ever not?” Grrh? Why do I always speak my mind without thinking?

The Duelist’s Seduction Release Day Blitz

The Duelist’s Seduction
by Lauren Smith
Series: Seduction, #1
Genre: Historical Romance (Regency)

Cover Designer: Fiona Jayde

Release Date: May 12, 2015

Helen Banks is going to die. When her twin brother gambles away their fortune, she must save his life and take his place in a duel to satisfy the honor of a man her brother couldn’t pay. Disguised as her brother, Helen faces the one man she’s admired from afar, a widower with a dark past and eyes that scorch her very soul.

Since Gareth Fairfax lost his wife, the darkness in his heart continues to grow. Lashing out at anyone who opposes him, Gareth is stunned to face a lovely young woman opposite his dueling pistol. After discovering Helen’s deception, he offers her a choice: become his mistress or her brother dies.

Their devil’s bargain turns into a slow, sweet, intoxicating seduction. With each passing hour, Helen uncovers Gareth’s secret heartbreak and yet she can’t help but fall for the man who has ruined her. With Helen in his arms, Gareth wonders if he might yet be saved. All it takes is one passionate embrace, a kiss from the depths of his soul and a night of wild abandon.

Gareth looked at her, her blue eyes gazing at him in pity. Did she not know what she was asking of him? Love was hard to find, hard to earn, and hard to keep. He reached up to tug one of her curls playfully, wanting to rid his mind of the thoughts she’d put there. His actions made her wrinkle her nose in disapproval. The urge to hold her was too strong to resist. He tugged her into his arms, relishing the feel of her body flush against his.

She was growing ever more receptive to his kisses. He let her mouth guide his, let her explore his chest, his arms, his back before she locked her hands around his neck. Her fingertips brushed the back of his neck and stroked his hair. He loved how quickly she opened up to him, how she let him instruct her in the ways of seduction.

The feeling of her touch on his skin made him shiver. She was a quick learner. Gareth wanted to part her legs again, like he’d done in the meadow, but the stables were no place for such an activity. Instead he teased her breasts through the fabric of her gown until he felt her grow breathless. He hardened, his groin aching with need, but he could not take her, not until she asked for him. He could have kissed and touched her for hours.

“My apologies, sir!” A groom, who’d walked into the stables, apologized profusely as he scrambled away, overturning a bucket of feed in his haste to depart.

Helen stifled an embarrassed giggle and buried her face in his chest as though to hide herself from the world. Gareth found himself laughing, too. It was a loud, rich laugh, one he hadn’t made in years. What was she doing to him? In a mere matter of a day, she had turned his world upside down. She was open and honest about herself and her life. And brave. He couldn’t forget that, either, the way she’d risked her life to save her brother’s knowing she would die. What woman of his acquaintance would have dared to risk her life? None that he knew. Helen was different. She was real and beautiful and so full of life. Each time he looked at her, something inside him seemed to shake off a century’s worth of dust and awaken. Being around her made him feel alive.

“Let’s get the horses ready. We should get a ride in while the day is young.” Gareth reluctantly pried her away from his chest and set about saddling the horses.

They rode at a nice canter for nearly an hour, over the meadow, down the hill, and through the neighboring lands. Gareth chuckled as Helen rode her mare through a flock of panicked sheep. They both nearly fell out of their saddles with laughter as they watched the wooly creatures bolt in all directions to avoid being trampled by her horse. The sheep gathered rebelliously into a flock several yards away, bleating melodramatically at having been attacked.

“Heavens! That was quite a ride,” Helen said as she watched the sheep shifting restlessly as her horse stomped and huffed.

“I daresay, the farmer, Mr. Pennysworth, won’t be pleased to find we’ve been scaring his beasts. Come, let’s away, Helen,” He chuckled and lightly tugged the reins of his horse, guiding it to turn around.

Gareth watched Helen the entire time they were out riding. He could not keep his eyes off the halo of her golden hair or the mischievous grin as she drove towards the sheep. Her little laugh was music to him, music he’d been missing for years.

Sing my little thrush, please sing to me. She was beautiful, she was perfect, and he would have to let her go. That brother of hers would eventually show up, and Gareth would have to deal with him when the time came. Damned if he knew what to do with Martin Banks. The fool might still insist on the duel, now over Helen’s honor. What a mess he was in. His eyes strayed to Helen, and her easy smile made all of the problems with his choice to have her fade. She was worth the trouble. He knew he could not keep her for long. Ambrose’s words came back to him. He was ruining her for her brother’s debts. Debts she shouldn’t have to pay, and he’d destroyed all chances of her making a good match. On the field after the duel that hadn’t mattered to him, in fact he’d relished the thought of hurting Banks by saddling him with a sister who would never make a match. But now…now he saw he was only hurting Helen, a brave, innocent woman who didn’t deserve any of this. Yet there was no way to undo the damage he’d done.

Marriage was out of the question. He had nothing to offer her besides his name and his body, and he knew only too well that a woman like Helen would need his heart to survive a marriage. For him, it was seduction, plain and simple. He had no right to anything else. He’d lost his right to love a long time ago. God would not give him a second chance, not after blessing him with Clarissa. That sort of love, he was sure, came only once. He had his turn and lost. Helen was nothing more than a cruel reminder of what he could never have.

excerpt

“Mrs. Cassie Morrow,” I said with a flourish, excited at my new title-to-be. “That has a nice ring to it.”

“That’s why I asked you to marry me, you know, just because Cassie Morrow sounded so nice. Think of where we’d be if your name was Kim or Monique…or Morticia.”

“I think we’d have a lot more problems if my name was Morticia.”

“Or if your name was To,” he continued. “What in the world would we do if your name was To?” he said playfully.

“To Morrow. Tomorrow. Very funny,” I said, laughing. “I don’t know if I like where this conversation is going. It started out nice, but somehow I think the sentiment is diminishing.”

“Diminishing? Never. Would you care to join me on the couch?” He extended his hand and bent down on one knee.

“I would love to.”

We curled together on our oversized tan sofa. Our bodies fit like matching jigsaw puzzle pieces, the most natural connection. The gentle rise and fall of his breathing and the beating of his heart lulled me into contentment. He wrapped his strong arms around me and pulled me closer…

“I love you, Jake. I love you forever.”

He bent down and kissed my lips. “I love you, too, Cassie. I love you, too.”

That is how I think of Jake. I think of him as my perfect complement. The person with whom silence is most comfortable; the person who completes me in every way.

We dreamed of a future. I breathed in deeply, trying to stop the tears that had already started to fall. In an instant, I could imagine our wedding. Smiling at each other at the altar. Being pronounced man and wife. Hearing echoes of applause and congratulations ring in my ears. Then, there we were in the hospital, but for something good: the birth of our baby. I held our child in my arms as Jake sat beside me, beaming. I saw us in our front yard, playing catch with our two kids, laughing. The tears fell rapidly down my cheeks. We were gathered around the kitchen table, feasting on a big breakfast of pancakes. I inhaled deeply again. Jake and I were older, at his dream house—the house by the brook—sitting on the porch, holding hands. I trembled with despair and anger.

It was supposed to turn out like that.

It was supposed to work out.

How did I end up here?

Wainland’s perceptive descriptions lend a richness to the lives of each character…She breathes life into them in such a way that I felt like I was watching a movie instead of reading a book.” —Brenda Casto, Readers’ Favorite

About the Book

Among the close-kin clans of western rural Malfesian Murians, farming and gelf ranches are long held traditions.  Times are good…full barns, fat gelf calves and large families thrive among the sprawling grain fields and hamlets and the river from which they derive their name—the Feldon.  Word comes with the trade caravans that times are not so good in the regions far to the east of the Feldon River:  tumultuous changes stir among the remote province of Bleikovia.  Old timer Feldovats shrug it off as one more squabble between clans over boundaries or water rights…too distant to affect the Feldovats.

The western clans learn too late, however, it is no local squabble.  Outnumbered and unprepared, Feldovats resist a hoard bent on plunder and conquest.  Days of battle along the Feldon River stain the riverbanks in green Murian blood.  In the finals days of exhausted fighting, Judikar Klarvko Celo, leader of the Clan Klarvkon and the Feldovats, is fatally stabbed with the slow-acting sevon poison.  The Judikar’s consort, Etikaa Klarvkaa, becomes Regentkaa, and with Celovat Field Commander Korvo Celo serving as her advisor, she leads the demoralized Feldovat survivors on a gruesome ill-prepared winter trek through high mountain passes of ice and blizzard snow in an attempt to elude the Green Dragon forces of the Bleikovats.

Etkaa’s only son, Klarvko Celo II, helps spirit Feldovat young across a remote mountain exodus to the west toward Eedov Province. The battered, starving Feldovats reach the Malfesian coast at Eedov City only to be confronted with their implacable enemy determined to destroy the remaining Klarvkon rabble.  Taking passage on crowded lumbering Maalonovion freighters, Feldovats and Malfesian refugees set sail.  On arrival in Maalon City they are welcomed among their Maalon hosts, and settle into a new life.

But famine and a pandemic pestilence stir old hates and nurse former ambitions.  The enraged Overseers of Bleikovia move against the Klarvkons, this time bringing bloodshed to Maalonovia.  The exiles from the Feldon must fight once again, but starvation and plague across the Planete Myr make it a different war from the battles along the Feldon…a na’ä blikovat…the Bleikovvat Phenomenon…an event with unexpected consequences and outcomes none could have foreseen.

Before the vendetta killing is exhausted, the Regentkaa Klarvkaa and her son are swept onto the Maalon throne, setting the Klarvkon Dynasty and the Murians toward an intergalactic golden age, and a star-flung destiny the once-agrarian Feldovats could never have envisaged.

Excerpt

Savage disruptions fell to the northeast, far beyond the river of the Feldovats. Like a great hungry migrating herd, the well-provisioned Bleikovat invasion stormed across the sparsely settled Bremanovion uplands and adjacent borders with Dornovia. The onslaughts organized and coordinated. Clan Elder Heldo Dorno’s call to arms came too late. Dornovats and Bormeikovats fought side by side, their uncoordinated resistance fierce, and just as quickly, subdued and overrun. Bleikovat slash-and-burn strikes were no tribal skirmishes, and did not stop until the Green Dragon banner of their legionnaires reached the northern ice fields along the frontiers of the Feldovat provinces. In the confusion of burning fields and farms, Elder Heldo Dorno and a large band of Dornovat fighters slipped across the ill-defined borders into the provinces of the Feldovats. Bleikovat ground units sealed off the borders. Dornovia and Bormeikovia provinces were put under military occupation.

In the market square of Dorno’s largest settlement, a cordon of armed legionnaires rounded up bewildered and confused Dornovats. In full battle armor, the imperious Bleikovat Field Overseer stepped up onto the podium. His stone-faced gaze fixed above the heads of the sullen faces below him. His aide read the first diktats. “A new era of political arrangements is proclaimed. By the Overseers of Bleikovia supreme obiter dicta—Dorno is annexed into greater Bleikovia-Dorno. Dornovat males of clanhood now serve under Bleikovat commands. Any Malfesovian formerly of Bremanovia and Dorno not following Bleikovat orders will be arrested. Henceforth, outer garments, including tunic, toga, khiton or cape, must bear the Green Dragon crest of Clan Krrakov of Bleikovia. The Dragon crest will be worn in the center of a shield, on the upper left shoulder or below left mid-waist. Display of other crests is forbidden. Any Malfesovian, Dornovat or Bremanovat in possession of shields, toga or banner bearing crests other than the Green Dragon of the Krrakovats will be executed.”

Excerpt

Caro was aware that her voice was rising, but she could do nothing to stop it. Now was as good a time as any to speak her mind. ‘As a matter of fact, if you could stop all the wars on this planet, solve world hunger and reverse the effects of global warming, I’d still feel nothing for you.’

It was the briefest look of pain flitting across his face that silenced her. Then his mouth hardened and his eyes blazed. ‘I’m your boss, Caro.’ He spoke very slowly, his voice vibrating deep in his throat. ‘All I’m asking from you is some respect. Your unwillingness to greet me at the meeting today; that wasn’t very mature, was it? How far do you think we’ll get on this project if that’s the way things are going to be between us?’

Caro was stung. ‘If you think I’m going to be anything other than professional, then you really don’t know me at all. I’ve worked for five years to save the African wild dog and I’d never do anything to jeopardise this project.’

‘Oh, I believe you,’ Ben said. ‘Nobody knows better than I do just how ambitious you really are. As a matter of fact, what was I thinking? Of course you’d never let anything get in your way, least of all other people’s feelings.’

Caro gaped.

He leaned towards her. ‘I’m right, aren’t I, Caro?’

Again he stared into her eyes, his own narrowed and filled with fire.

She could see the cords of muscle beneath the golden skin of his neck. Her breath came in small, silent gasps, and she pressed a hand to her chest.

Ben’s gaze travelled slowly from her face to the hand against her naked skin. He opened his mouth, closed it again. His body tilted towards her, his fingers heading for the bunch of towel between her breasts. Then he snatched his hand back, shook his head, turned and started for the door.
