About the Book
Two months before Troye Saavedra’s senior year of high school, his father’s drinking problem skyrockets. When Troye’s parents make an impulsive move to Georgia in order to “help” him finish high school on a positive note, he is forced to leave behind everything he knows. Things couldn’t get worse for Troye. That is, until he meets three enigmatic teenagers: Adelaide, an independent violinist with radical ideas; Zaidan, fiercely loyal and always funny; and Arabella, a girl who harbors secret struggles. Together, the four friends try to pick up the jagged pieces of their lives without getting hurt themselves. An insightful tale of perseverance, Silence Interrupted is a young adult novel about the beauty and peril of traversing the world as a teenager.

About the Book

mummys-little-angelJoanne didn’t believe that her life could become worse than it already was. She had lost everybody and everything she had loved. She was alone. Surely she had suffered enough? The press had called her identical twins psychopaths. Her Maggie. Her Annie. But she still loved them, even though one of them had killed her husband, Jeff. Joanne believed that his murder had been an accident. How could one of her girls be a murderer? She knew them better than anybody else. They were good girls really.

She just had to prove it.

The brutal murder of her god-daughter Laura had never been solved. Items were missing when Laura’s remains had been discovered: clues that could lead to the capture of her killer. One of them was Laura’s doll … the doll that Joanne later discovered in her home. Joanne is facing the most horrific dilemma of her life. Has the wrong woman been imprisoned? Could her child have used such brutality against her best friend? Or could both women be innocent after all?

She needs to find somebody for her daughter to confide in; somebody she will trust. She needs a miracle. There is only one person who can help. He is compassionate and caring, with an amazing ability to gain the trust of the most difficult patients. He is Joanne’s only hope. He is Jonathan Davies.

Guest Post

by JW Lawson

Once upon a time …

I had a dream. That dream was to publish my book. The book I’d been working on for many years. The book I’d created in my mind when I was just nineteen. The book I was too frightened to complete – for fear that I would be judged, criticised, even laughed at. I stopped writing and concentrated on my career and, along the way, I met many amazing people …

“Before my accident, I was a professional diver,” he said. “ I broke my neck in a diving accident which resulted in me becoming a paraplegic. But, that hasn’t stopped me at all! In fact, I’ve just sailed the world, despite my disability. And, I’m helping many others to achieve their dreams in the same way that I have.”

A beautiful, young woman directs her wheelchair towards me and smiles. “Yes, I’m going to learn how to sail,” she whispers. I bend down so that I can hear her soft voice. She moves her long, blonde hair away from her face and her eyes widen. “I’m so excited. I really didn’t believe that I’d have the confidence to do this, but I have … thanks to this hospital and the friends I’ve made here. I will sail. I will have a future and I will qualify as a doctor … someday. Her eyes fill with tears. I pass her a tissue but instead of feeling self-pity, she tells me her story. “I am the lucky one. My three friends were killed instantly in the crash and me? I am blessed. I didn’t even suffer from a scratch. It’s Ironic that the ambulance didn’t see me and ran over me isn’t it?” I don’t know what to say, where to look even. Her pretty blue eyes meet mine. “I had to stop studying for a while, but thanks to this wonderful rehab unit, I’m ready now to move on and make my dreams come true.”

The television cameras focus on the patients as they are assisted into the wheelchair accessible vehicle our Company built. I’m bursting with pride. Not for me but for them. Each and every person sitting in this vehicle has an amazing story to tell. Each and every one of them inspires me.

The following week, I meet another customer. The journalists are there, along with fifty trustees from a Charity and many dignitaries. He struggles out of his wheelchair, stands up, and taps on the microphone. Despite a speech impediment, he delivers a moving speech. Despite his profound disabilities, he smiles for the camera and thanks me for helping his dream come true. As humbled as I am with his kind compliments, I feel a fraud.

I finished my book and wrote another. And someday, the author who was scared of being laughed at … or judged, will write another book. A factual book based on the lives of the amazing people she has met who are simply grateful to be here and still have dreams. I genuinely hope that they all come true.

xx

Book Review

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of Fresh Brewed by Pamela Ford for the purpose of an honest review.

It was an absolute pleasure to read Fresh Brewed by Pamela Ford. It isn’t often that I get to read two books in the same series for review in such close proximity to each other. This novel in The Continental Breakfast Club series follows my review of Over Easy on August 2nd, and I’m hoping the third installment won’t take too long to find it’s way onto my reader!

The same characters inhabit Fresh Brewed that we first met in Over Easy. These ladies are up to their unusual antics and this time things are even more serious. An inheritance is at stake and the ladies of The Continental Breakfast Club are ready to make sure that doesn’t happen, regardless of the heartbreak that might ensue.

I loved them in Over Easy and I love them even more after reading Fresh Brewed. The question is, how long will I last? I’m ready for Honey Glazed to harken me back to my reader for even more fun! If you haven’t picked up these two books yet, what are you waiting for?

I definitely recommend Fresh Brewed by Pamela Ford and give it five steaming hot cups of Room With Books coffee.

It was an absolute pleasure to read Over Easy by Pamela Ford. This is a book that captured my attention and held it from cover to cover. It had plenty of action including manhunting, sleuthing, and lots of laughter!

Ms. Ford has created a cast of characters that is easy to relate to, then you mix in a trio of furry friends and the story is bound to get a little wild!

I love that Over Easy is the first book in a series so I can get my fix for The Continental Breakfast Club in pretty short order! You should pick up a copy. I think you’ll be very pleased with your purchase!

Author Q&A

author banner

What made you write a book about women sneaking into hotel continental breakfasts to try to meet eligible men?

I was at a continental breakfast several years ago, minding my own business of course, when I spotted a good looking guy in a suit eating breakfast alone. Suddenly the question, “What if. . .” popped into my head and the story idea was born. I started writing the series in third person, but quickly switched to first person because it seemed a more natural way to show the central character’s personality—and quirks.

If you are a mom writer, how do you balance your time?

My youngest child is now in college, so I have much more time to devote to writing. But balancing that time is still difficult because my daughters call 75 times a day. Okay, I’m exaggerating, but they call a lot—when they’re walking home from class or going to work or bored or making cookies or. . .

What is your favorite travel spot?

I don’t have a specific favorite spot, but I really like water—lakes, oceans, ponds, rivers. . .even puddles! If there’s a body of water nearby, I’ll like the vacation.

What childhood books inspired you to want to write books?

I was a voracious reader as a kid, so I think that libraries in general are what inspired me to write. For a while we lived in an area serviced by a Bookmobile, and I can still remember what it felt like to go to the Bookmobile every Saturday morning. I discovered The Black Stallion series on the bookmobile, which was like getting a gift since I was a city girl who was always begging my parents for a horse.

If you could go back in time, where would you go?

I don’t know if I would go back, but I’d really like to go forward. I would love to see what the future holds—whether space and interplanetary travel is commonplace and if we will have colonies on other planets.

Where do you write?

I like to shake up where I write because it helps keep my writing from stalling. I’ll write at my desk, or on our three-season porch, or at coffee shops. I really love working in coffee shops that open their exterior windows/walls in nice weather.

Sunborn Rising Winning Art Work

On a distant world of forests floating on an ocean around a star,

a blight threatens to plunge all life into darkness.

But three friends seek the light.

Together, they will Fall and be lost.

And at the very Root of darkness, they will find themselves.

But will it be enough to help them find their way home?

Characters of Sunborn Rising

The world of Cerulean

Light and water flow from the ocean into the roots of the Great Trees, up through the boughs, and out over the lush canopy. But the once vibrant treescape has grown dim over generations of arboreal life, and the creatures of the forest have forgotten the light.

Barra, a young, willful Listlespur, finds her late father’s hidden journal, and reads about the old world and the mysterious plague her father believed destroyed it. He wrote that he warned the Elders. He urged them to take action. Those were his last words.

Together with her two best friends, Barra will explore every bark, wood, and leaf of the Great Forest to relight her world and complete her father’s story, even if she has to travel beneath the Fall.

Guest Post

Congratulations, Patricia, on the changes coming to your Room with Books website! I sincerely appreciate your invitation to guest post before you transition to more reviews than tours. Good luck! Okay, let’s get started.

Inspiration is an odd concept. I never seek it out. I don’t know what it would look like if I ever found it. And no one thing has ever been entirely responsible for anything I’ve created. Inspiration is less about “that thing” that inspires, and more about your receptivity to being inspired. While it’s true that an inciting event or sight might affect you tremendously, your insides have to be unlocked and unguarded to experience it. People frequently ask me about my inspirations, and I do my best to answer in a straightforward manner, but having this guest post opportunity, I thought it’d be fun to give a more complete, albeit less straightforward answer: Everything and nothing. From a dust mote hanging just so in a ray of light to firemen rushing headlong into a burning building, on a given day, either could make me weepy — though I’ll never admit to it: *sniff* “Allergies.” On another day, with a syringe full of liquefied emotion plunged straight into my heart, the most effusive response leaving my lips might be, “Ouch.” Hyperbolic maybe, but I think the point is clear. Inspiration depends on me.

External factors definitely matter too, but as collections of moments strung together over time instead of a single instantiating event. Space exploration, rather than walking on the moon. Travelling, instead of that one trip to Germany. So, while stories almost always occur to me as flashes of inspiration, the experiences responsible are varied and numerous, and in that precious flash, they’ve come together in a new way, that I was lucky enough to observe. After all this time of writing, I can unreservedly say that music and stand-up comedy are always close to my heart, and that I’m more open to those forms than any others. I’m listening to Hum, The Very Old Man, right now, and I’m absolutely positive that demarks the end of this post.

Thank you so much for reading, and for indulging in this roundabout explanation. I guess I was inspired. Did anyone see what did it? 😛

Book Review

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of Really Good F Words: Your Interactive Guide to Self-Care by Lorrie Forde in exchange for an honest review.

It is my pleasure to have an opportunity to read and review Really Good F Words by Lorrie Forde.

Ms. Forde presented a challenge to my regimented world right away by asking that I allow myself to write in a book. I am most happy to keep a notebook separate from my “study guides” but in my more than half century of living, I haven’t been able to bring myself to write in them. I realize this may be a block that I need further work on.

Reading Really Good F Words has given me another tool to work from a place of darkness and fear to a place of fearlessness and fulfillment along with a close group of friends that I’ve learned to trust.

I don’t think I’ve been taking the time to realize how much I give away without filling up. I’m looking forward to introducing Really Good F Words to my friends and encouraging a group study!

I recommend Really Good F Words by Lorrie Forde to anyone looking to turn further in to a positive, fulfilled lifestyle!

I give Really Good F Words four cups of froth-filled Room With Books coffee.

 1969 and Then Some

About the Book

1969 and Then Some is a memoir of the 60s and the influence of those years over the decades that followed. Romance, psychedelic insight and motorcycling evolve with the narrator maturity, such as it is, and non-compromise on morality and the undying spirit of adventure in nature.

While the 60s is often discounted or as ephemeral—as a social aberration—1969 & Then Some offers keen insight to lingering values that cannot be separated from significant segments of the most significant population group alive today, the baby boomers, many of whom still hold sway in key areas of social and cultural evolution.

REEF LIBRE Book Tour @snorkelbob @iReadBookTours

REEF LIBRE

CUBA

The Last, Best Reefs in the World

by Robert Wintner

Reef Libre

About the Book

Cuba reefs host apex predators and coral cover at optimal levels. While Cuban reef vitality may be linked to economic default and no shoreline development, no agricultural pesticides or fertilizers and limited human population growth, the Castro regime is aggressively developing its reef potential.

Seas to the south are now 100% shark protected.

Most Cuba travelogues advise “getting off the beaten path,” but Reef Libre examines that path, to see where it might lead as things change. Will Cuba reefs remain protected? Or is this perilous age of natural decline a last chance to see a healthy reef system?

Robert Wintner and the Snorkel Bob Jardines de la Reina Expedition herein provide narrative insight with photos and video. First stop is the baseline: Havana urban density. Down south at Cayo Largo, reef collapse seems imminent with 600 guests changing daily, and the phosphate-laden laundry water flowing directly to the deep blue sea. Will Cuba’s Ministry of Tourism step up with the Jardines de la Reina paradigm? Rising from the Golfo de Ana María, Jardines is a thousand square miles of mangrove estuary, for ages compromised by constant extraction of its biggest predators, taken as food. Protected, it now rises on the world reef stage.

A DVD comes with the book in a paper sleeve glued to the inside cover. Reef Libre, the movie, runs about an hour.

Book Review

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of REEF LIBRE from Robert Wintner in exchange for an honest review.

It was my pleasure to be able to read REEF LIBRE and view the DVD included with this book.

The photography in the book was of such an incredible quality and so realistic that at times I felt like I was swimming the reefs myself. I was able to lose myself in the book’s images and found myself leafing back through it over and over.

Reading REEF LIBRE and watching the DVD was very educational and I enjoyed sharing the photos with my family as I was reading through this book.

REEF LIBRE is a book that I will treasure for years to come and it will hold an exclusive position among my collection to be passed along to future generations.

It is with a great deal of satisfaction that I give REEF LIBRE five steaming hot cups of Room With Books coffee.

About the Author

Robert Wintner

Best known as Snorkel Bob in Hawaii and around the world, Robert Wintner captures Cuba above and below the surface with urgency and hope. As a pioneer in fish portraiture, Wintner demonstrated social structure and etiquette in reef society. Reef Libre goes to political context, in which human folly will squander Cuba’s reefs as well—unless natural values can at last transcend political greed. As pundits joust over who did what to whom and why, Wintner ponders reef prospects in view of political changes.

Robert Wintner has authored many novels and story collections. Reef Libre is his fourth reef commentary with photos and his first overview of survival potential in a political maelstrom. He lives and works in Hawaii, still on the front lines of the campaign to stop the aquarium trade around the world.

Kill and Run Blog Tour @TheMysteryLadie @iReadBookTours

Kill and Run

by Lauren Carr

Kill and Run (2)

About the Book

Kill and RunFive women with seemingly nothing in common are found brutally murdered in a town home outside Washington, DC. Among the many questions surrounding the massacre is what had brought these apparent strangers together only to be killed.

Taking on his first official murder case, Lieutenant Murphy Thornton, USN, believes that if he can uncover the thread connecting the victims, then he can find their murderer.

The case takes an unexpected turn when Murphy discovers that one of the victims has a connection to his stepmother, Homicide Detective Cameron Gates. One wintry night, over a dozen years before, her first husband, a Pennsylvania State trooper, had been run down while working a night shift on the turnpike.

In this first installment of the Thorny Rose Mysteries, the Lovers in Crime join newlyweds Lieutenant Murphy Thornton and Jessica Faraday to sift through a web of lies and cover-ups. Together, can the detectives of the Thorny Rose uncover the truth without falling victim to a cunning killer?

Three Days Forever (A Mac Faraday Mystery)

Three Days to ForeverIn this latest Mac Faraday Mystery from best-selling mystery author Lauren Carr, readers will embark on a roller coaster adventure with old friends (including the Lovers in Crime team of Prosecutor Joshua Thornton and Homicide Detective Cameron Gates), but also meet new ones as Mac Faraday’s daughter Jessica Faraday and Joshua Thornton’s son Murphy Thornton join the team in the race to get the love birds to the altar!

With three days left to the year, Deep Creek Lake is hopping with holiday vacationers and wedding guests pouring into the Spencer Inn for Mac Faraday and Archie Monday’s huge wedding ceremony which is being touted as the social event of the year.

But droopy flowers and guests who failed to RSVP are the least of Mac’s and Archie’s problems when a professional hit squad hits Spencer Manor to send the groom, Joshua Thornton, Archie’s mother, and Gnarly running for their lives.

With time running out to the big day, Mac Faraday and Spencer’s small police force have to sort through the clues to figure out not only who has been targeted for assassination, but also who is determined to stop everything … FOREVER!

From Writers Block to Best Seller

By Lauren Carr

Recently, a book blogger sent an email which read, “Lauren, you have been averaging two to three murder mysteries a year—all of them best-sellers! This year, you have released three books. Do you ever get writer’s book?

Actually, I have had writer’s block. Between drafts of It’s Murder, My Son, the first Mac Faraday Mystery, I spent a year staring at my laptop. I was completely frozen.

At that time, I had left my publisher because they did not have a paperback division. It is very hard to sell a $26 hardback when you’re an unknown. Ebooks were still being discovered back in 2010. Getting rejection after rejection, my search for a publisher specializing in mass paperbacks was going nowhere.

After a full year of staring at my laptop, I threw up my hands and walked away. I actually announced to my family that I was giving up writing for good. I spent the next month doing volunteer work, going to lunch, and working out at the gym.

Suddenly, I was back at the laptop rewriting It’s Murder, My Son. Notably, this draft included the beloved canine character of Gnarly (my most popular character), who had not been included in the previous drafts.

Of course, my family reminded me that I had said I was giving up writing for good, to which I responded that I was going to return to writing, but this time, I was going to self-publish. If my books sold—fine. If not, that was okay because I was going to write what I wanted to write and for no one else.

Ironically, a month later I received an offer from a traditional publisher. I turned them down. It’s Murder, My Son has been one of my most popular books, making it to #1 in mysteries on Amazon.

Since that time, I have never had any trouble writing—except for that time Gnarly drooled all over my laptop and it shorted out. As a matter of fact, I literally finish one book and go right into the next one. The day after I sent Kill and Run, the first Thorny Rose Mystery, off to the editor, I went to work on Cancelled Vows, the next Mac Faraday Mystery.

What was the secret to getting over writers block?

American poet William Stafford offers this advice to poets who suffer from Writer’s Block: “There is no such thing as writer’s block for writers whose standards are low enough.”

This sounds terrible at first. “What? I’m supposed to write junk? I need to write the great American Novel! I’m better than that!” No, Stafford is not encouraging writers to produce garbage. He is suggesting, however, that it’s easy to take yourself too seriously.

When I walked away, when I stopped trying to impress literary agents and publishers and decided to write what I want for myself, my writers block went away and I am now the happiest writer in the world.

Now, fourteen, going on fifteen, books later, I am still writing for myself. Yes, I do check out reviews and I love to read emails from readers about how they love Gnarly and how much they are looking for to the new series, or asking what is next for Mac Faraday and Archie.

When that rare reader takes offense by a certain turn I have taken in a plot or how they perceived a certain character, or an unintended message written between the lines, I may listen to their opinion, but in the end I make the final decision based on what I want to write, because—

I write for myself.

When teaching a class about writing, I open and close with a warning to the writers not to give into the temptation to rewrite the latest best seller in hopes of cashing in on the latest trend—like all those 50 Shades of Grey or Hunger Games books that have hit the market in the last few years.

As tempting as it may be, even if you self-publish, then once again, you find yourself writing for someone other than yourself—stretching and straining to meet someone else’s standards.

The truth is … gradually readers have been discovering the previously undiscovered treasures produced by independent authors. It’s a huge library in cyberspace. So, even when an author’s writings don’t meet the desires of the most popular marketing demographic, he or she can still find a niche audience who will appreciate his or her story on his or her own terms.

Believe me, it is much more fun writing what you want and love to write.

Hunter, Book 2

Guy Erma and the Son of Empire

by Sally Ann Melia

Hunter

Guy Erma and the Son of Empire is a new three-part action adventure, set a long time ago on a planet far far away.

How dare you? How dare you hold me captive?

13-year-old Teodor was taken by the vicious Battle Borgs of Dome and now he must fight to survive within the Dome.

13-year-old Guy Era is offered a chance to fight. Only who will be his opponent? Will he face a Battle Borg of Dome? he knows his entire future depends on this one-on-one fight in the light and shadows of the Dome.

Two boys as different as any two boys might be. They face the same enemy, the same danger, the same fear – dare they trust each other?

Introducing the Battle Borgs of Dome

Once they were heroes. These men died as heroes in battle. Now they are reincarnated as the fearsome vanguard of the Dome Elite. They are the Battle Borgs of Dome. When you fight fearsome aliens who have more advanced technology and are innately cruel to lessor species, how many men must die? What kind of warriors do you need? Men who are not afraid to die. Men who have been tried in battle before. Men who are superhuman with cybernetic limbs and implanted weapons. These are the Battle Borgs of Dome Elite. These dead heroes reincarnated as cyborgs and the front line crack troops of the Dome Elite.

The Dome Elite Authorities accept no responsibility for injury or death of civilians entering into inappropriate contact with the Battle Borgs of Dome.

Lock up your women and children! These Borgs retain human instincts but know not their own fierceness and strength.

Who holds the safe words? Part men part machine, the Battle Borgs are programmed with safe words, words that control them for use by their leaders and lords. Who controls those words, controls the borgs!

BOOK REVIEW

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of Hunter from Sally Ann Melia in exchange for an honest review.

I previously read and reviewed Kidnap, Book 1 of the Guy Ermand and the Son of Empire and this is where it ended . . .

Two boys as different as any two boys might be. One act of cruelty will throw their lives together, but who dare they trust?

Now Hunter picks up where Kidnap left off.

Ms. Melia has written another astounding novel  in Hunter and I found myself recaptured in the YA Sci-Fi Thriller series in the Guy Erma and the Son of Empire. I held back a tear as a mother while thinking of the feelings Sayginn must be feeling while Teodor remains missing. I gritted  my teeth as she raced in the Magnolia Stakes. I wanted to scream my frustration as the Dome Elite commanders responded to Sayginn with sarcasm and derision. I held my breath as Karl listened telepathically and tracked Teodor fro place to place.

Hunter is an excellent sequel with a great deal of imagination for the YA reader as well as more mature audiences and I am very excited about reading the next book, Exile, and reviewing it!

I highly recommend Hunter, Book 2 of Guy Erma and the Son of Empire by Sally Ann Melia. I give Hunter five interstellar cups of Room With Books coffee!
