The door flung open and a man stepped into her room. Who was he? The vaguely familiar scent of sandalwood and pine filled her senses. Her heartbeat spiked, but she held her ground and set her chin, determined not to show him an ounce of fear.

There was no denying his masculinity. He was tall and his massive shoulders filled out the cloak he wore. Shadows enveloped most of his features, but she could make out his penetrating amber-hazel eyes through the darkness. A soft gasp escaped her.

He raised his hand and lowered his hood. An inherent strength filled his profile. Confidence. Concern. Relief.

Rosa’s breath jammed in her throat. He looked familiar. He smelled familiar.

“Rosa, it’s Michael. Let’s go.”

“I’m not going anywhere with you.”

A frown set against his rugged features. “I don’t have time to argue — now put on a warm

dress and cloak.”

“No.” She was not going anywhere with him despite the relief in his voice.

He sighed and shut the door. Moving with fluid grace, he crossed the room, jerked the

door to her closet open and threw the items he wanted her to wear on her bed. “Get. Dressed.”

“No.” She was determined not to budge, despite the danger outside.

“Rosa, we’re leaving.”

“I’m staying.”

“Why would you want to stay? Clement kidnapped you.”

Disconcerted, she pointedly glanced away from his hard stare. What did he mean by kidnapped? Clement didn’t keep her behind bars and feed her only bread and water. Rosa could even go into Brasov to shop as long as Lucien or one of the bodyguards went with her.

“I’m going to take you back to your mother.”

GENRE: Inspirational Romance (Amish)

About the Book

Housed in a rustic red barn, the Simple Gifts crafts shop celebrates the talents of the Amish of Willow Ridge—and the faith that inspires them. For the acceptance of simplicity opens the path to love.

As far as Edith Riehl is concerned, the baby twins thrust suddenly into her arms are a heaven-sent gift. Unable to conceive, she longs to be a mother with a home of her own. She’s going to abide by her promise to handsome Asa Detweiler to take care of them while he looks for their real father. And even if her domineering dat Cornelius refuses to countenance Asa’s suit, she can only pray the bachelor’s honesty and persistence will uncover the truth—even as he’s kindled an impossible hope for a love of her own…

Asa can’t understand why anyone would think he would be so dishonorable as to father babies and then abandon them. He’s determined to clear his name—but Edith’s caring ways also inspire him to help heal her wounded spirit and earn her trust. In the face of heartbreaking deception, he and Edith must find the strength to understand, forgive…and claim their own hearts’ joy.

Turning quickly to hide her tears, Edith swayed faster as she clasped the twins to her shoulders. Dat made a valid point, but his harshness made her heart shrivel in sympathy for the twins. Her head was starting to pound with their strident cries. She could barely think, much less refute her father’s claims.

“I know how you always side with the underdog—how your heart opens wide any time you’re around little children,” Dat murmured as he approached her. “But I’m watching out for your best interests, Daughter. You entered into this agreement without considering the long-term consequences. What man will marry you if you’re saddled with twins who aren’t even yours? You’ll be stuck at home forever, doomed to be a maidel—a single mother—while all your friends find happy lives with suitable husbands.”

Who would marry me anyway? Edith thought sorrowfully. I’d be a liar if I didn’t tell a potential husband that I’m unable to bear his children . . . because Dat didn’t take me to the doctor soon enough. If only my appendix hadn’t burst. If only the infection hadn’t attacked my female organs . . .

Edith bit her lip against a sob. It wasn’t right to dredge up her past resentment—not after she’d forgiven her father years ago, at Mamm’s insistence. Dat was standing close enough behind her that she could feel the disapproval radiating from his body as he awaited her compliance. She dared not mention the vow she’d made to that strikingly handsome stranger.

Promise me that you’ll mother these kids—and that you’ll hear me out when I return, all right? His voice still echoed in her mind, mysterious and compelling.

Asa Detweiler had no idea how desperately she longed to be a mother—how she’d agreed to care for these twins to satisfy her own selfish desires. She’d believed him to be sincere and compassionate, but she dared not mention that to her father, either. Cornelius Riehl had lost a large part of his heart and soul when Mamm passed away, but that didn’t mean he’d lowered his expectations for his three daughters. If anything, he held them to higher standards now that Mamm wasn’t around to buffer his gruffness, his moods.

GENRE: Mystery

About the Author

Still recovering from the traumatic events of the past year, newlyweds Aggie Malone, police chief of Dogleg Island, and Deputy Sheriff Ryan Grady are looking forward to a carefree day of picnics, pirates and buried treasure with their precocious—and uncannily perceptive– border collie, Flash. But when Flash discovers a body in a shallow grave on the deserted Wild Horse Island Nature Preserve, a tangled knot of conspiracy, murder and deception begins to unfold, revealing that the things that are buried are often the most dangerous and the only pirates you have to fear are the ones that live next door.

Fifteen hundred miles away, an ex-con and a fifteen-year-old girl embark upon a crime spree that will earn them the nicknames “Bonnie and Clyde”. As they make their way inexorably south, Aggie, Grady and Flash are thrust into the middle of a murder investigation that leads to the arrest of one of their neighbors and the attempted suicide of another. When a search of the dead girl’s belongings reveals a priceless emerald bracelet and two of the islands most popular residents go missing, the puzzle becomes even more complicated. Grady and Aggie struggle to put all the pieces into place while Flash, ever obsessed with understanding the human condition, wrestles with a more painful dilemma: how do you tell the good guys from the bad guys when they are so often the same person?

Excerpt

Aggie dropped the phone into her pocket and shouted, “Flash!”

While she was on the phone Jack had cast off and started the engine, but he hadn’t yet moved away from the dock.  Aggie dived for the rope just as Flash reached the rail.   She stripped the rope off the cleat and tossed it to Flash, who made one circuit around the rail support before leaping onto the dock with the end of the rope in his mouth.  The boat began to edge away from the dock, taking up the slack in the rope, as Aggie snatched the rope from Flash and started to wind it around the cleat.  She was tying the knot when she heard the gear lock in and felt a strong tug that almost pulled her off balance and into the water.  Panic leapt to her throat.   She finished tying the knot, praying it would hold, and shouted, “Jack Saunders, cut your engines!  Cut your engines and disembark!  That’s an order!”

The line stretched taut but the knot held. The boat rocked in the water.  Saunders called back,

“You can’t give orders to a captain on his own boat!”

Aggie pulled her gun and got down on one knee in a shooter’s stance.  “Cut your engines this minute or I swear I’ll fill this boat with so many holes she’ll never float again!   Do it now!”

The boat railing began to creak as it strained against the pull of the engines and the opposing pull of the rope.  Aggie held her breath, but she also held her aim.    In a moment the engines throttled down. “Return to dock!” she shouted.  “Disembark with your hands above your head!”

Flash jumped on board as soon as the boat was close enough, and kept Saunders in the pine-scented wheelhouse until Aggie had securely tied off again.  He had done take-downs before, but never on water and never, he had to admit, one that was this much fun.  Captain Jack snarled at him but Flash had bigger teeth, and after he demonstrated as much the captain gave him no more trouble.  Saunders climbed sullenly onto the dock and raised his hands in the air.  Flash kept a wary eye on him.  After all, people, as he well knew, were unpredictable.

Aggie holstered her gun and snatched Jack’s hands behind his back.  She was breathing so hard she was practically wheezing, and she was soaked in sweat.  “You are under arrest,” she said, with difficulty, “for evading a police officer, interfering with an investigation, withholding evidence, and disobeying an order from an officer of the law.  Damn it,” she said angrily as she snapped the cuffs closed, “I told you not to make me do this the hard way.”

Today you will start lessons with me and learn to access your mage powers,” said Uncle Gabriel. “There are a few training exercises I want to start with, which will help you to access and channel your magic. I want you to have an open mind, and follow my instructions very carefully.”

I listened intently, breathlessly awaiting the secret I was so anxious to discover—how magic worked.

“You are still young and so far your powers have been diminished by the amulet, but if you have tapped into your fae magic already by mind bonding with the pegasus, that means that your powers are already manifesting,” Uncle Gabriel said.

He lit a candle and put it in front of me on the table.

“Now, our first lesson is going to be on concentration,” said Uncle Gabriel. “I want you to focus on this candle. Remove all other thoughts from your mind.”

I stared at the candle, my thoughts drifting in and out. Uncle Gabriel had said he was going to teach me to do magic. This was not magic; this was torture. My thoughts flickered back and forth like the flame on the tip of the candle. Finally I looked up.

“This is silly. Nothing is happening,” I said, getting frustrated.

“You are not concentrating,” Uncle Gabriel said, glancing up briefly up from his work. “Block out all other thoughts. If they come, push them away and keep focusing on the candle. Nothing else is of importance; your whole mind and concentration is on that candle.”

I tried again, but my thoughts wouldn’t leave me alone. Every time I looked up, Uncle Gabriel made me try again. He even changed the object of my concentration, from the candle to a smoothly polished stone, to a vase and back. I tried again and again, and every time it was the same, my thoughts came and went, flitting about in my mind, and my concentration was broken.

“Same time tomorrow, Aurora, and please practice. I expect you to concentrate on an object for measurably longer. Holding your concentration is one of the key aspects to working with your magic. You have to learn to channel your powers properly. If you can’t control your mind and will, then when you release your powers, they will be all over the place, and we don’t want that,” he said seriously.

Tired and thirsty, she finally made it to the courtyard. Edmund was nowhere to be found. She should have expected it, really. No doubt he was in the palace filling their great-grandfather’s head with forward-thinking ideas. She crossed her arms, staring at the steps. Several carriages waited nearby. No one in their right mind would let her into the palace looking like she did — like she had just stepped out of the gutter.

“Excuse me, who are you?”

Alice spun around to find herself face-to-face with two gentlemen who stood near one of the waiting carriages. One gentleman was older, Alice guessed in his fifties, one younger. The older gentleman stared at her like she truly was a guttersnipe, but the younger one — he was tall, with chiseled cheeks and sensitive hazel eyes. His broad chest filled his suit well and he measured her with a cool, appraising look that hinted at… appreciation. An uncomfortable feeling washed over her. Never had a man’s stare made her feel so… warm.

“Well?” asked the older gentleman.

Alice straightened her posture with her usual royal dignity and took off her glasses as she always did when she introduced herself. “I am Her Royal Highness, Princess Alice of York.”

The men looked at each other, at her, then back at themselves. She wasn’t sure if they were befuddled, confused, or wanted to laugh. Finally, the older gentleman spoke. “Princess Alice is seven years old.”

Alice bit the inside of her lip, realizing she had totally forgotten where she was due to the younger gentleman’s attention. She slid her glasses back on. “Simply call me Alice — Alice Windsor.”

“And you may call me Prime Minister.”

Halfway down the alley, he pivoted and stalked back in her direction. He glared at her, as if somehow all this was her fault.

“I was dying to let every single one of those guys know you’re mine.”

Liz could only stare, stunned. So she was right. He was jealous. What was worse, the intensity in his gaze sent a fierce yearning rolling through her belly in hot little waves. Daniel had looked at her like that once. Right before he decked some guy for making a pass at her.

Every limb shaking, she squared her shoulders, trying her damnedest to get her equilibrium back. It didn’t matter why he was behaving like a Neanderthal or how sexy he looked doing it. He had no right. “You do realize it’s going to be all over town by tomorrow?”

Something flashed across the recesses of his eyes that she didn’t catch before his jaw tightened and his expression blanked. He stalked to the end of the alley, where the blacktop met the sidewalk, and stared out at the street beyond. “It was all I could think of. The way he looked at you, I knew exactly what he was thinking, and you were standing there, frozen in fear.”

Liz folded her arms. It was a meager defense, but it was all she had left. “I wasn’t afraid of him. I could have handled him if I’d had to. My father was a police officer. He taught me how to take care of myself. So did my husband. I know self-defense, and I’m a damn good shot. I—”

Luc pivoted around, eyes wide with surprise. “You know how to shoot a gun?”

“Daniel insisted I learn. I have a nine millimeter, and I have a permit to carry concealed, though I’ve never had the guts to actually carry it on me.” She frowned, unsure who she was more irritated with: him for getting to her or herself for responding. “The point being, I could have dropped him if I’d needed to. But I didn’t.”

Luc cocked a brow, clearly challenging her assertion. “Then why did you look so panicked? Who the hell was that guy?”

She heaved a sigh. He had her there. Damn it. “An overzealous fan. He kept going on and on about my writing, and people were starting to stare.”

But that was neither here or there. It was past time to end this insanity.

“Look, I have no idea what to expect after a one-night stand. That’s essentially what we shared, isn’t it? So, I expected we’d said our goodbyes and we wouldn’t see each other again. When I didn’t hear from you, I figured we were going our separate ways. I get it. But I’m fairly certain that means you forfeit your right to be jealous. I appreciate the concern, but I’m a big girl. I can handle myself.”

Without waiting for a reply, she pivoted on her heel and stalked from the alleyway, heading for the safety of the booth as fast as her legs could carry her. Whatever the hell this was, she was backing out now, because alarms bells were sounding in her head.

The Party

Cooper’s fingers dug into her arm with bruising force, leaving Davey no choice but to defend herself. Punching out with the heel of her free hand, she struck him in the nose. Rearing back in pain, he immediately let go and she struggled to keep her footing. Recovering, Cooper snarled and lunged to retaliate. Davey scrambled but wasn’t fast enough to escape his reach. And then suddenly she didn’t have to. A dark figure stepped into Cooper’s path, and seconds later, Cooper was on the ground bleeding and wearing a dazed look. He wouldn’t be getting up anytime soon.

Deeply shaken, Davey opened her mouth to thank her rescuer, but he had already gone. Swallowed up by the dancing mass of sweaty teenagers.

Davey wanted to be home at once. All she could think of was cuddling with Hogan while reading him a bedtime story before tucking him in. She ran outside, yanking a hoodie over her head to protect against the chill. Gulping in the misty fresh air, she calmed down enough to slow to a stroll and began what would be a long walk home. But there he was. It hadn’t been her imagination. Remington stood on the shadowy road, blocking Davey’s path.

She stopped several yards from his position. A safe distance away, she hoped. “What do you want?”

His reply was so low she could barely make it out. “I needed to be sure.”

Davey’s heart was thudding out of her chest. Had he seen her dealing? “About what?”

“That you were okay.”

“Oh.” She hadn’t expected that. “If you were so worried, why didn’t you stick around?”

“The directive tonight was recon only.” Remington took a step closer. “I think I may have compromised it by causing a scene.”

Weirdo alarm bells ringing at full volume, Davey took two steps back. “I’m sorry saving my ass messed up your mission. Thanks anyway.” Going in the other direction would get her away from him but also make the trek home thirty minutes longer. It really didn’t seem like a bad trade off.

“What did that guy want from you?”

“It’s none of your business.” Davey quickly started walking.

Remington followed. “You could have been hurt.”

“Again, none of your business.”  She doubled her stride, but he kept pace effortlessly. Forging ahead for about fifty feet, Davey stopped. “What the hell are you doing?”

“I’m escorting you home.”

Flabbergasted, her mouth opened and shut. “Why?” she finally asked.

Remington watched her for a quiet moment. His features were oddly attractive in the glow of the streetlights. “I swore to serve and protect. It’s my job to keep you safe.”

Unconvinced, she gestured toward the house where the party raged on. “So a cop is going to show up and escort every one of those kids home too?”

“No.”

She folded her arms. “Then why are you following me?”

Remington shifted. “I don’t know.”

It wasn’t really an answer, but the way he spoke, as well as the manner of his movements, made the words seem true. Plus, Remington hadn’t appeared comfortable admitting them.

“What’s your name?”

“Officer Remington.”

“Well, I don’t like cops. Give me something else to call you.”

“Like what?”

Davey rolled her eyes. “Like your first name.”

“Oh.” Remington smiled. The expression transformed his features, and she thought he should do it more often. “Ethan.”

“Okay, Ethan. Walk me home.”
